Super Crafty: Saving the World from Mass Production!

This delightful book was written by the intrepid ladies of Portland Super Crafty, a collective of independent craft-business owners who’ve banded together to rock the world. They are: Susan Beal, Cathy Pitters, Torie Nguyen, and Rachel O’Rourke.

Let’s start with the projects! There are over 75 of them here, and they’re projects that:

* Involve using reclaimed or recycled materials.

* Cost very little to make.

* Will pretty up your house, car, pets, bike, wardrobe, or outlook on life.

A few of my favorites: Shrink Art Jewelry, a Superhero Slip and Boxers set for you and your honey to save the world in, and a lovely set of striped legwarmers for your favorite doggy. And, this may be the only craft book in the world to have instructions for making pasties.

Aside from the craftiness, you’ll find articles on many facets of living a crafty life, such as: the power of handmade things to bond people, using your craft for postive social change, and the importance of making new things from old. Each of the Super Crafty women also shares their most and least favorite art supplies, and their best Crafty Disaster stories.

If you happen to be an aspiring crafty entrepreneur, I also highly recommend Portland Super Crafty’s website, which is loaded with tips on hanging out your own crafty shingle.
