I’m studying to kill a mockingbird in English literature, a pretty amazing book.

1 Thing I Still Don’t Fully Understand Is “It’s a sin to kill the mockingbird.” Could anyone offer any insight or explanation on this, and how it relates to the story? Thanks Guys, D.

I’ve Read It Twice, Reading For 3rd Time Atm. Apparently There Is More Than 1 Mockingbird… It’s Pretty Complex. Some More Insight Into The Importance Of Boo Radley In The Novel Would Be Nice..

It’s a folk tale (to kill a mockingbird) just a myth.

not the book. The saying, to kill a mockingbird is a sin, is a just a tale. It’s because a mockingbird mimicks what it hears and can sound very beautiful while, a bluejay sound horrible and is annoying to cats.

I think that during the time and setting of the book, it was really a sin to kill a mockingbird. I think it’s because it was God’s bird created to fill the world with its song. Come to think of it, killing a bird for doing nothing wrong and for singing a beautiful song is as awful as a sin. When you kill a mockingbird, you kill an innocent creature.

So in the story, find characters that are innocent and yet got punished for something they didn’t do. Also, humans have the power to kill a mockingbird, because we’re the stronger species. So look in the story for characters who got others in a rut just because they’re stronger and have the better place in society. In the book, you’ll read that there’s discrimination, prejudice, hatred to Tom Robinson and Radley. Just because people don’t know them well and because people “CAN” do it to them. They are mockingbirds who got destroyed by those who CAN and did.

Another view here is that a mockingbird is a symbol of innocence. To kill a mockingbird would then mean to kill the innocence. This is seen when Scout and Jem started out as innocent kids in the story who think that everyone is good. They were later exposed to evil. Scout was able to keep on seeing the good side of human nature. For Jem who believed in justice and the goodness in mankind, and then realizing that what he believed in isn’t true because mankind is evil etc, Jem lost hope in mankind. So in Jem, the mockingbird here is the innocence, the belief that man is good. And it’s a sin to kill this mockingbird (the faith in Mankind) because when Jem realized that man isn’t good, he lost faith in his belief in justice and humanity. Here, the song that is sung by the mockingbird is the belief in justice and humanity. The bird stops singing. Jem stopped believing. And who destroyed the mocking bird in Jem? The world…by the people.

I’m only 3 chapters away from finishing the book but I decided not to continue reading it. I’m not sure if my interpretation is correct or its what the author intended in the story. Well, I hope this helped somehow.

Mockingbirds do nothing but do good for people, they dont eat up peoples gardens or nest were they are not wanted, all they do is make pretty music for people to enjoy. Their are a bajillion metephorical mockingbirds in the book. Tom robinson is the biggest. he does nothing but help people(mayella), but society still condemns him for being black. another is boo (arthur radley) who did nothing but the world is so cruel and judgemental and they taunt him so much that he goes into hiding and metephorical “dies.” their are so many, mrs dubose, calpurnia, mayella, atticus, the roly poly scout wanted to smoosh, mr. raymond, the list goes on…
