I’m in the same boat as you. I have the choice to take French, Spanish, German, or Mandarin Chinese. It’s really hard to choose, isn’t it?

Well Chinese is the most spoken language in the world followed by Spaininsh and English so if you get those under your belt you are pretty much sorted

Why? We don’t have to communicate with them just shoot them during war.

It depends. If you are more of a risktaker and are going into busieness or foreign policy, I would say Russian. Otherwise, I think Chinese would be a good choice for someone going into education or business and who finds Chinese culture and food appealing.

I think it depends. I live in Canada, so Russian and Chinese wouldn’t come in handy very often.

Most ¨china towns¨, like the one in vancouver speak mostly cantonese, that is of course slowly changing. I think when most people say they want to learn chinese they are refering to the mandarin dialect.

thanks friends for interesting at Chinese.
If you have more chance to communicate with Russian, Russian is more necessary.
If you are more interesting at China, then choose Chinese to learn first.

My web’s blog offers free Chinese learning lessons…
Maybe can help you a little…

i’m russian & i’m learning chinese. so far very interesting. compared to the russian grammar, that of chinese is very simple, other aspects make this language difficult to learn. if i wasn’t russian myself, i’d have gone for russian. otherwise, chinese can be fun to take up. as many of you said, depends on the purpose

It depends on what are your purposes to learn any of these 2 languages. If you are going to stay in China for a while, then yes- Chinese, if you plan to live in Russia - then Russian, Russian is one of the most beautiful and at the same time difficult languages to learn. If you would like to study in China than you can try Hutong School http://www.hutong-school.com/ I have tried it myself and enjoyed a lot my time spent in Beijing!

I’m from Hong Kong and I think that Chinese is very intriguing. However, there is much memory work to be done.

Well, there is no “better” language of course! You just need to ask yourself: Why do I want to learn this language? Where do I plan to travel or live? What would be the most useful for my work? etc.
Hopefully, I helped you set up your mind.

If you’d like to lean Chinese in Paris I recommend CHINESE INSTITUTE. I had a great experience there, and all the teachers are native.

Watch Mandarin films and listen to Mandarin radio or podcasts. Listening and imitating native Mandarin speakers will help you identify and mimic natural sounding pronunciation and intonation. Several resources, such as the listing of Chinese Internet radio stations on the website Multilingual Books, are available online. Thanks.
