How many calories should I be taking in each day to maintain my weight?

I am a 130 pound 5′8″ male.
I’m not very active.. I mean I don’t play any sports.
I do have to walk a lot during the day though.

For your height you are very skinny, also, it depends how old are you. If you are young and by looking at your measures you gave here, I would say too, 2000 calories. That is if you keep walking a lot. The minute you stopped doing even that limited exercise, you must drop it to 1600 calories.

I agree with the above, there is an old saying , calories in and calories out, because you walk a lot, which is a form of cardio, you are burning the calories you put in during the day. Try to sustain about 2,500 if you want to gain, but remember there is less health related issues when you’re thin, than there is if you are overweight. If you are concerned have a physical with your doc, he will tell you if your weight is lower due to anything underlying.

Ok Thanks everybody!

I have another question.. I have a hard time eating that much.
I would have an easier time drinking. There’s this milk/powder shake I heard of that can give me 900 cal. My dad says it’s not the same as regular food,
but isn’t a calorie a calorie?

No. The whole idea of eating is different from a liquid form or a pill. The whole digestive system that work to break down solid food would not be stimulated. You don’t need to eat so much at once, eating 6 to 8 times a day small portions would do all the trick. What you need to do while eating is drinking lots of water. Not juice, coffee, tea, pop, beer or wine, but WATER.

Put your height, weight, and age in the boxes. It’ll give you a figure for your basal metabolic rate. That’s how many calories your body burns just keeping you alive.

Use the Harris-Benedict Equation to determine your daily caloric need. If you want to gain weight, eat more than that. If you want to lose weight, eat less.

Good luck.

beaticegalant- you’re right..Thanks!

apollo- Thanks a lot for that! I know exactly how much I need to maintain now.
I didn’t know that adding an additional 500 calories a day is what I would need to gain a pound a week. I ought to do that I suppose.lol
