Hard help: Are liquid diets ok? - Help.com

Are liquid diets ok?

I need a way to supplement my diet because I’m having a hard time eating and so I’m not meeting my daily caloric intake.

It’s so much easier for me to drink and I found a powder shake that can give me 900 calories. Would this be ok for me?

I had to do this for a while after I had Pancreatitis. Why can’t you eat?

One can of *Ensure* is full of the necessary calories contained in 1 healthy meal. DRs. recommend this to cancer and to other patients who like yourself, are unable to consume solid foods. Just be sure to drink the 350cal. one 3 times a day.Best also if diluted with a little water or milk, to make the drinking more pleasurable.

I’m no nutritionist so you probably could get better advice than I can give.
But I would imagine that you should go for maximum calories.
Something like an avacado, yogurt(no low fat) and soy milk shake would be the
way I’d go if I was on some dietary restriction such as yours.
First off the yogurt & avacado are both excellent sources of calories. Second,
the yougurt mixed with the soy milk will make a complete protein, I remember
my father saying Dairy & legumes consumed together make a complete protein,
something about the amino acids. You could throw in a little wheat germ and
some berries for fiber and vitamin C. Honey… theres some more calories for
you.

Mix some shortening or lard into the shake and you should get all the calories you need.

You may also consider getting one of thoe puree blenders. Then you can pretty much make any solid food into a liquid. Works on meats veg. soups, anything :)

Avacados actually have alot of good fats, so maybe try eating guacomole with multigrain tortilla chips for a snack between meals to increase your caloric intake, oh and I actually have a protein shake recipe with a bunch of fruit and stuff in it, so I’ll go see if I can find it. It’s more of a breakfast thing if you’re like me and you can’t eat in the morning. Otherwise whenever.

Something like this might be better for you, Anon, because it’s more about protein and what’s in it than the actual calories. And I’m recommending some things that are lower fat than regualr, like skim milk, because if you’re not eating correctly, even if it’s in the context that you’re not eating enough, your heart might not be in tiptop shape, so you shouldn’t really add trans and saturated fats to the mix. It may raise your caloric intake, but it’s just not healthy for anyone.

Okay, so here it is. Or they, rather. Please forgive the silly names, they aren’t mine.

Fuzzy Peach:
1 carton (6 oz/175g) peach yogurt
3/4 cup 1% or skim yogurt
1/2 cup each frozen banana chunks and frozen peach chunks
2 tablespoons frozen orange juice concentrate
1/3 cup vanilla protein powder

Berry Delicious:
1 carton (6oz/175 g) blueberry yogurt
1 to 1/2 cups orange juice
3/4 cup frozen whole mixed berries or strawberries
1/2 cup frozen banana chunks
1/3 cup vanilla protein powder

Peanut Butter Bananarama:
1 carton (6oz/175g) vanilla yogurt
1 cup ice cold water
3/4 cup frozen chunks
3 tablespoons natural peanut butter or almond butter
Handful of crushed ice
1/3 cup vanilla protein powder

Directions for all smoothies: Place all ingredients except protein powder in blender. Whirl until smooth. Add protein powder and mix on low speed just until blended. Server immediately. Each recipe make 2 servings.
*The bananas in all smoothies should be just starting to show brown spots.

This is just a suggestion so if you don’t want to use any of them, just tell me buzz off. :) lol Also, maybe try soups and stews, that kind of thing. Anyways, Anon, have you thought about seeing a nutrisionist to help you out?

I wouldn’t tell you to buzz off! I’m so glad you put that together for me.. It must of took a long time. First off thanks for your concern about my heart. I’ve been using 2% reduced fat milk. Im guessing that’s okay too or do you think I should switch to skim milk??. Yeah, I heard that it’s not all about calories but the protien too. I know nothing about nutrion so yeah seeing somebody would probably be smart lol. I did actually see my doctor the other day for a regular check up and everything is fine I had blood work done too. Only thing they found was that my iron’s slightly low so I’m gonna be taking vitamins. Thank you soo much for the recipes!..I like the sound of Peanut Butter Bananarama!:) Yum.

No, 2% is fine, the recipe just called for skim, but you can use 1%, too. That’s what I make my mom buy. It didn’t really take that long to type and I’m happy to share. Oh, for iron eat brocolli and raisins. They both have a lot. So why can’t you eat very much? No appetite or something else?

Hey Thanks!.. I didn’t know about raisins. I think I have some at home.

Exactly!.. I lost my appetite. It always seems to happen when I go back to school.
I’m not sure if it’s because of stress or my depression problem. Anyway, I lost about 6 pounds in the last month. It happens every school year and sometimes I lose as much as 15 to 20 lbs before the end. During the summer I work really hard to gain it all back only to lose it again next yr. Now I’m worried though because I’m losing too much too fast. I can only eat like 2 or 3 very small meals a day.

I typically lose about 10-15 pounds during the first semester of a new school year. It sucks. Try eating spicier foods (or at least foods that are less bland). Foods with a strong taste tend to stimulate your appetite. Try cranberries/ cranberry juice, ginger, or peppermint. The Celestial Seasonings Tension Tamer tea (which contains several herbs known for appetite stimulating and stomache soothing effects) also helps on days that I’m stressing out and it’s affecting my ability to eat properly.

Ginger is good for an upset stomach, but personally spicy foods when I’m not very hungry just make me fel ucky.

They dont have to be really spicy, just flavorfull. Just something that is tasty and activates your salivary glands.

Nope, still wouldn’t work for me. You know those toaster struedal things that you can get? I tried those for breakfast for a while (and they have lots of cinnamon) and ended up throwing… away more than I ate.

OK, then I would suggest going to a doctor to get anti nausea meds as a last resort. I dont know how they affect anyone else, but they knock me out even if I just take half a dose. Natural remedies tend to have fewer side effects for me and also seem to work better. The toaster streudel things could have made you feel nauseated due to the ridiculously high sugar content. I personally cant eat pop tarts in the morning for the same reason.

Nah, I can’t eat toast either. I can’t eat in the morning. Food just doesn’t sit well on my stomach early in the day. By the way, when’d this turn into give Laina advice?

Hey Doc I really appreciate your input here. I will certainly give that a try!
I like the sound of the tea. I notice sometimes when I drink a lot of fluid I have an easier time eating. Maybe it expands the stomach?..I don’t know.
Anyway, I assume you’re using these methods so has it been working or are you still losing weight? Thanks!

Thank you too Laina for your help! BTW I ate a ton of raisins yesterday.
mmm mmm they’re so good:)

Yeah, they help me. I did still see my doctor though because stress isnt the only thing that can cause appetite loss. I lost about 15 pounds this year, but I think I’ve pretty much gained it all back now. I got the idea about the flavorful food from a book of natural remedies. I only started out weighing about 125 so I was starting to get pretty weak. I just went to the store and bought everything that looked good. If I wanted a hamburger, I drove out and got a hamburger. It took a week or two to completely adjust myself back to the idea of eating again, but now I can almost out eat my older brother ;D

Nice:-) I’m going to the store today to check out some of that stuff.
I just want to thank you for all your help..

Also, I found this product online yesterday which they claim is a natural way to increase your appetite. I’m gonna try your way first though,
but it’s nice to know there’s another option to try.
