“The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Ive got a few questions to ask??
- What does the forest road represent?
- What do the 2 roads symbolise?
- What does the last line mean?

The forest is life, the two roads symbolise different ways we can go. The last line says that him taking a different path made his life better.
If you look at the entire piece though, you will see that he looks down both paths as far as he could to determine which would be better. The persona decides that he would take the less worn path, which he then decides is pretty much the same.
Through life, we have decisions to make and we cannot go back and choose alternatives. We have one path and it is continuous. When we look back and tell others about our life, most of us glorify our ways, tell of our struggles and how we were different.
hahah hsc english, the old dayz
It was only 2 years ago for me, which is why I remember some of it. I have more detail on it too. So much time spent on it.
yuppers, that’s me too, very close to the city hehe
I’ve actually been thinking about this poem of late. I quite liked it.
yep yep its a nice piece. oh yeah and lol i can tell you you still remember it, very good interpretation =)
I prefer to write than read though. Creative writing is better than interpreting someone elses.
Just though of something.
Juxtaposition the didactic elements of light and dark can be seen as the left and right path with the ambiguity of the term right being used to signify the light path, and the path to god.
Thats really good, I think it is supposed to represent life and haveing directions to take, sounds like they took the route that not everyone takes and in that sense it was better because it was more unique.

But in further revelation, both paths appear to be equally used. This is exhibited in

Yeah but the person feels that the way they took was less used even if ther was no evidence for that…
Or is the persona only saying that so that they could see themselves as a leader, a path maker, rather than a follower. It can also be a somewhat traditionalist way of looking at things. A path that was worn, but overgrown. If he takes this, he is going back to old ways.
Oh cool, didn’t see it like that, interesting how poems can be seen in so many different ways and also have so many different meanings, I think it also depends on the mood of the person who is reading it at the time.
Very true. I find there is a nostalgic essence to this poem. Kinda makes me sad, but I still love it.
awww thankyou SO much!! You have helped me ALOT! VCE is so hectic, sOOOoOOoo much work to do.
Yeah is good, see you said it makes you kinda feel sad where I see it as exciting, like the person is on an adventure.
I over studied it in English. School, good times. Sometimes at least. =)
LoL yeah :P
I think if you disect something like this the words become lost, as poems are more about emotion and wanting the person reading to feel that same emotion so takeing a peom appart and studying each part of it kinda loses the feel to it, or so I think.
Through disection, we can find the hidden messages. What someone was feeling as opposed to what they wanted readers to feel. Words are merely a medium to get across what is really going on within our hearts and heads.
This poem is actually in retrospect. A reminiscent persona that is recounting parts of his life, which is why I detect sadness. There is the nostalgia and the learned wisdom that he can never take both paths, because he never had the chance to go back and take the other.
LoL ok, I didn’t study English so you lost me with that reply, over my head, I saw it go :P
Well I am glad you made some sense out of it, I am more about how things make me feel rather than what the meanings are to things.
blaahhhh..this stuff is booooorrrinng!
is the speaker happy with his coice? how do you know?
is the speaker happy with his choice? how do you know?
