school help: I am 15 years old, and suffered a wrist injury 3 years ago. - Help.com

I am 15 years old, and suffered a wrist injury 3 years ago.

I had an operation 2 years ago that has left me with severe chronic nerve pain. I have really struggled to cope with the pain, and have seen about 8 different doctors who have given me nerve blocks, other procedures and i have been on loads of painkillers, but they aren’t very effective. I was wondering if anyone else has a similar injury or has some advice to help me cope with it. Being only 15 i have my standard grade exams this year and have hardly been at school because of the pain. Please help

I’m really sorry to hear of your injury :( Two years seems like a long time to be in pain, and it sounds as if it’s a pretty severe type of pain too.
Unfortunately I can’t be of much help as I haven’t experienced your specific problem, but I have had a kidney stone before and I know how hard it can be to focus on something else when the pain can be very bad. It’s really good that you care about your education and your exams though, and hopefully with your enthusiasm you’ll be able to work through the pain to attend school more often and complete your exams. Even if you can’t manage to, remember there are always other alternatives and that you can still go far in life without a full education. Although, being a current student myself I can understand the desire to finish school.

While I can’t offer much advice, I can suggest several things which might help. The first is learning breathing techniques to manage the pain. Although this sounds a little far-fetched, deep breathing can sometimes help manage pain. Another suggestion is to use psychology on yourself- pretend you’re applying the pain yourself and you can stop it at any time. Pretend that you’re testing yourself or something like that. I don’t know if it would work, but it’s worth a try.

Sorry I couldn’t help much. I hope you can find the answers you’re seeking for though, maybe try doing a few google searches for pain management or something similar. And, before I press post, I would also just like to say how brave you are for enduring the pain you’ve been dealt. It must be so harsh being in so much pain, especially during your teenage years, but continue to be strong and don’t let it get you down. You can do whatever you want to do with your life, regardless of the pain. Remember that. I know it’s hard to manage it, but you’ll get through it. Hang in there!
