I need help overcoming my addiction to video games.
I grew up on games and I’ve been trying to get away from them for over 5 years but I can’t seem to escape their web… I have low will-power and I would like to hear some methods that have worked!

Yeah thats the thing. Everytime I quit, I come back to it b/c, as sad as it sounds, nothing else seems to interest me. The usual cycle is
a) I quit
b) I work / study a lot and do well in college
C) I get burnt out and binge on games
Has anyone else gone through this before?
Sell all your games and stuff, and try and pick up something new to do. If you have a weak will, you really need to have something to replace gaming with.
i dont know anyone who has gone through this…but i know for a fact selling all your games wont help
what time do you play games?

It’s just really hard to find a new hobby when NOTHING else seems to interest me. As sad as this sounds, whenever I’d quit before, all I would do is work hard all week and then party on the weekend. But I have a girlfriend now, and I can’t reward myself for working hard any other way.

Pretty much whenever. The real problem is that it’s really interfering with college, and I’m not able to do as well b/c I just avoid class or studying in order to play a goal-oriented game in order to get a quick fix. I just keep convincing myself that it’s not a big deal, and that its the last time, or that I’ll make up for it later. I just can’t escape this cycle!!
Well one things for sure you gotta replace a habit with a habit….So your best bet is to get rid of them and pick up something else…Is thee anything else that interests you….movies…sports….anything?
Well I would start by trying lots of new things, also maybe find some classes you like to go to, I mean I know that’s sort of oxymoronic but ideally you should like whatever your majoring in.
You should study at the library.
The only other thing that really seems to interest me is fitness / bodybuilding. I’ve been working out as long as I can remember, and no matter how addicted I get to games I never stop trying to stay in shape.
Another thing is that I’m really not a people person… I’d rather be by myself or with my g/f than hang out with people, most of the time.
I think that I just really need to find something else that interests me. It’s just really hard b/c I’ve literally been playing games in my free time since I was like 6 years old. I just wish I didn’t like them anymore, than I would eventually find something else to do.
The real problem here is that it really affects my grades, and I’ve completely bombed semesters ( straight F’s) b/c I avoid class and homework until its too late, which is often the case. I just really wish I didn’t like video games, or that I liked something productive even more than them.
I’ve had this problem my whole life and its really holding me back from my real potential. I guess there is nothing anyone can do to help me, I just need to keep trying, and force myself to stay away from them until I don’t need them anymore. And once I’m away again, I need to not come back to them, no matter what. Thanks for all your advice / help everyone
There are defiantly thing that can be done, you just have to talk to a professional maybe. I don’t know exactly who would be the right person to talk to, but maybe take a behavioral psych class or something or talk to whoever teaches it. There are all sorts of things that can be done that defiantly work in behavior modification.
uninstall all your games. I can focus better when I’m at the library
occupy your time… get out more, make plans wit friends!!! go shoppin, go for coffee wit a friend, go for a walk/run/dance… go to the library, go rent a movie, get into a sport of your choice… haha go play bingo!!! iuno dude thats wat i wold do…
Hey!
Was too lazy to read the other posts…
But right now back in college and used to be a gamer… (Literraly spent days awake playing WoW, barely bothering to eat or anything else.. and before that Diablo, Warcraft, Quake CS… the list goes on…)
Well thin is I set places for everythign,
Gaming I do at home and only till 1 at night…
All my studies I do in the library and take breaks alot in the library and talk to people…
If possible set your computer to an autoshutdown or logoff at around 12:30 to remind you to get off the comp…
Cause once it kinda quits like that you dont feel too inclined ot get back in…
Then find somethign as interesting to do..
I started wall climbing and jogging instead… (just the challenge of trying something like climbing and trying to perfect your technique and stamina and all…)
All the best trying…
Just learn to moderate…
ty all, I’m going to go to sleep. You’ve been really helpful!
Think abt ur career u wll b afraid. Cause if u dnt rd thn u wll b a very much valuelss prsn. Do u lk to b a nglctd prsn in future? Who wants, right? Own pwr is ttlly dffrnt pwr. To lv lf wth low status & hgh status is ttlly dffrnt, isnt it? So fr ur good leave tht addiction. Prms to any grt matter or any prsn or to urself & dnt brk th prms. Good luck.
It is an addiction so the best way to overcome an addition is to do a cold turkey.Make this your last one you read and then just turn off your computor. Go outside to a park and enjoy the park or riding your bike or take up a sport. Get involved in helping other people by voluteering . You have so much energy in playin ggames so redirect it to something you may like. If you don’t know what it is try habitate for humanity. You can help build a house for a needy family and feel good about yourself. That’s what an addiction does for ppl just get addictided in a positive way.
may god be with you.
ps one more thing if you try to fast for a day this could help you with self restraint that’s what fasting does for ppl
