Welcoming Committee…

Alright, we have decided as a help.com community to have a “welcoming committee” for the time being until a small section is added to the front page. This section will say all of the newest members to this wonderful site. Hopefully, this happens soon so that we can make all members welcome. Until then, we all need to try our best to make people comfortable.

A few people elected, and chose me as the leader of the welcoming committee. If you want to join, please put your name underneath this list. Thanks! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Well, When will the new update happen that would render this committee useless?

Hold on - Mas1st - put forward the idea that it was nice to welcome people. Personally Mas1st thinks that since you cant identify newbies this would be a random act of kindness (random as in if you find them). I’m not a big fan of committees as the members tend to try and outdo each other. I do think there is an idea inside this project but do you really have to turn it into an exclusive club? It could be wiser to make a post asking everyone who spots a newbie to welcome them. And to remind us all that it’s not a big job to hit the ‘make friends’ icon. That would probably be more productive - dont you think?

The only thing is that wouldn’t it clutter up the post, I mean wouldn’t it be too many of the exact same post though. For example each time a new member shows up, and somebody put a post saying “hey new guy” each time a new person showed up, it just seems like it would be too much of the same and dosen’t sound like it would work. And you couldn’t invite all the new users to one giant post, it sounds good but something like that would get big and seems like it would overload eventually. What you suggested sounded good in theory but there are just too many small factors to think about. Just a suggestion/opinion.

Every few months there is always someone that joins the site and wants to change how this site works. All that is needed to make this work is to change the wording in the post box to.

Welcome everyone to Help.com. Start here. Ask a question, post a rant, tell us your story.

Thats it easy and done. Hope this helps :-)

No I didnt mean make a post for each new person lol - I meant make a post for all of the existing people asking them to welcome new people - sorry still laughing.

I see, so if someone new came, a member of the committee could just add them to the friend list and then invite them to one post.

Yes, that makes sense. People should work together to help somebody get adjusted to the rest of the community. Ultimately we are all here for basically the same reason, to help people for one reason or another. Of course this is quite the task, but in theory it can be done.

Personally though, im not sure if im the one to do it, as some of my previous post haven’t gone so well though, but i’ll keep it in mind.

I thought we (the members) already welcomed new members, so of course we know the importance of a welcoming greeting to new commers, but Mas is right, it is impossible to identify whether or not someone is actually a newbie. I like the idea of having something on the front page that says “newest member or newest members”, but I also think that on this site that is open to troll abuse and we don’t need any more of that. Yup, Mas is right, a post reminding people to be nice to newbies is the best action to take.
