I can only think of two things immediately:

1) No matter what, make sure you finish.

2) I don’t think with the economy in the shape it is in that I would accrue any additional debt. I can’t tell you what to do. You have to make the decision for yourself, but I think it would be important to realize that the unemployment rate is at a high of 6%. Depending on which types of jobs you will be qualified for upon completing college, you might not be able to find a suitable job right out of college. High debt + no/low paying job = bad situation. I hope this advice helps you and I hope that regardless of which choice you make everything turns out all right for you.

Sorry but getting the education is the main issue here. The school is of no use if you have such a high debt and can’t attend anyways due to that fact. Your family realise this I’m sure. So continue on with the ed. and be happy :)

Your family will always be there no matter what you do. Grab onto every opportunity to get a great education.

Once you are past school age, the opportunities you have now will all but disappear. Sure you can return as a mature age student, but it probably wont be free, and the choices limited.

Hello,
Like the others I have voted for number 2, even though I don’t fully agree with the statement

[NisaANYgirl quote] Go to another school and disappoint my family [/quote]

I do not agree with this statement because no matter what your family will proud of you, you can easily do one thing, go to another college for 1 year and then get transferred back!

I don’t think your family will will disappointed with your decision. Your decision will free you from 51k debt…I think they will choice this option because it’s much better. When you graduate, you can at once help your family because you dont have debts to pay. I think it’s much easier and and a lesser burden for your family.

I cannot tell you what to do, but I can tell what I would do.

My education is important. The school I get it through may be important too, but less important.
My family may get disappointed at first, but they will realize the above.

But I will never feel free, having a large debt.

I would see the offer from the Dean as a gift from heaven - even if I got other debts, it would reduce the repayment time by several years.

The distance from your Grandma is another thing. But you can travel a lot for 51K!

You really have to decide now. Choose the lighter one. It will free you from all your cares and I’m really very sure that your family will understand. If they don’t, just ask them if they can help you pay your bloated debt. That will open their eyes, if ever they won’t understand you.

If you’re concerned about your family and what they will think, talk to them about it. See what they would hope for you. They should have your best interests at heart, right?

I would say if you’ll be that unhappy than transfer. Think about your future and what you’ll want to say that you did in this situation.

Your family will be proud of you, you are doing the best you can, the only thing any parent wants is for their child to be happy

I didn’t ask for you to dictate my choice, I asked for input on the situation. What do you THINK I should do and why, not tell me what to do and I’ll follow like a mindless sheep.

To everyone one else, thank you for helping. I’m going to try talking to my family about it -again. I will most likely end up choosing option two as everyone said because I really can’t find many reasons for me to stay at NYU.

Again, thanks to everyone who helped, I appreciate your input =).

I personally think you should give up schooling all together and concentrate on a real Job. With all your education already raking up 51k and still making up your mind in what and were to go ,all the best of Education will make your Finances get worse and you will definitely be not smarter. My suggestion is stop Schooling as an Excuse of getting a better job because i don’t think you have got it…Raking up a Bill of 51 K ,no wonder America is broke…Think of reality….

You missed the part where I said if I transfer to another school, the dean will erase the debt. So, yeah…

*FINAL UPDATE*

Hey everyone, I just wanted to thank you all for your input into my situation. I spoke with my family and they completely understand, and are even wholeheartedly supportive of me. They were pretty shocked that I stayed in a school I hated just to please them, and told me if it didn’t make me happy, I should have been honest from the start. This week, I’m starting the transfer process to Hunter College [a CUNY school, but also the one my mother graduated from]. Hopefully, I’ll be much happier and a lot less broke there =). Wish me luck! Thank you again guys!

I’ve been on Help for like a day straight. Gawd, I really need a life -_-… Anyway, while I’m here, I might as well get some help.

I currently attend NYU. Sort of. I’ve been forced to take a leave of absence because the financial aid department robbed me of all my aid from last year, leaving me in debt of about $51,000. Since I naturally can’t just pull this amount out of my ***, I was forced to leave school until the situation can be corrected. On this leave, I’ve basically been given two options: 1-Take out massive amounts of loans to cover the debt and continue my education at NYU, or 2-Transfer to another school.

This decision is not that easy for me. Some things that complicate it are that I have a very elderly grandmother (91) who I need to stay near, so I can’t just go to any school, but the other schools in NYC are either too good for me or not good enough. HOWEVER, the dean of my school said that he would have my debt erased if I transferred to another school, which is cool. Finally, I wasn’t really happy at NYU anyway, in fact I downright HATED it, but I feel obliged to continue and finish my education there because I’m the first person in my family to go to such a school.

What do you guys think? Please leave your reasons in the reply field. It’s really important that I have some input on this, so all help is greatly appreciated.

[poll: Stay at NYU in massive debt and unhappiness, Go to another school and disappoint my family]

Love you all, Nisa… Now off to get some rest and take a break from Help =)
