writing help: I need to write a paper about myself, but i never know how to start it off, can someone help me with my opening? - Help.com

well, you need to make it interesting, to get attention…..so something humorous would be good. maybe a question, or a series of them, like “never met me? want to know me?”etc. of course if it’s a school paper not those questions exactly, but something of the like.
im not that good at these things myself, as i don’t have a lot of practice……im homeschooled….so sorry if it isnt helpful, but i tried!!!! :)

Start with this:

“I do not propose to write an ode to dejection, but to brag as lustily as chanticleer in the morning, standing on his roost, if only to wake my neighbors up.”

“I need to write a paper about myself, but I don’t know how to start it off. Should I start by talking about [that first-grade play where I forgot my lines and left the whole cast suspended on stage dumbstruck], or about [my long-term dream of being the attending physician for the New York Yankees]? Should I tell readers how I am the [only son in a family with six girls], or should I let them know how I [stayed up all night memorizing the Gettsyburg Address, only to discover the next day that it was the Emancipation Proclamation that the teacher had assigned?]

“I guess I will start at the beginning by writing that I was born [on a military base in Germany, where my father was serving in the U.S. Army, and was named after my great-great-grandfather, used to sail on a whaling vessel.}”

OK, THERE’s your beginning. Where the brackets are, you fill in your own information. You can actually follow this model exactly, if you like, using: an embarrassing thing you did as a kid; your life goal; your family situation; and another funny/strange memory, followed by your birth tale.

So, for example, if I personally had used this model in high school, the essay would have read like this:

“I need to write a paper about myself, but I don’t know how to start it off. Should I start by talking about the time when I as five years old and my older, fatter sister sat me on one end of a seesaw and then JUMPED on the other end, propelling me into the air and eventually into the emergency room, or should I talk about my long-term dream of being a big star on Broadway? Should I tell readers how I am the youngest in a family of nine kids, or should I let them know how I once played Santa Claus to the family of poor kids next door, but dropped my tummy-pillow squeezing through the door?

“I guess I will start at the beginning by writing that I was born in New England on a beautiful fall day at the very end of my mother’s 25 childbearing years, and was so much younger than my oldest sibling that I was already an aunt when I entered the world.”

Now, you do the same thing, following in YOUR information. Have fun!

Usually it is good to write the narrative about yourself first…

perhaps start with “even those who know me don’t know that I….” or “One special attibute that I would say makes me unique is….” or “the hardest lesson I ever learned was” then write what you think you want your auience to really “get” from the essay.

Later, go back and write the intro.. the intro should start with something broad that applies to your audience or interests them and then leads up to a foreshaowing of the thesis/purpose/moral to the story.

Start by saying how good u r and how ur better then everyone else…it’ll get attention lol
