Its cliche, but amazing grace. Especially on bag pipes.. Yea, I’m christian, but let me tell you something. Religion is in someways meant to give people hope, build them up, and fill them with contentment.

I would love to try and get you to fall in love with God, but if anything in this world gives you peace. Then there’s no problem with that.

I have a quick question…

I’m atheist/agnostic, but still enjoy the Catholic hymns that I was raised with very very b>VERY /b> much!!! They make me feel really happy and… I dunno, filled [ew, that’s a weird way to put it]. Is that weird? Are there any other non-religious/atheist/agnostic people on here who enjoy religious music?

Any religious people who’d like to tell me their favorite hymn?

Thanks you guys =)!

~Nisa

My favorite hymns are O Come, O Come Emmanuel and O Sacred Head Surrounded. Ever heard of them? I used to be Catholic lol…

I have heard of some of those, though I know more contemporary christian music better.

Truth is everyone needs to find what makes sense to them, use their own discernment. :-)

But do you think it’s weird that I love them? They’re special to me.

They’re songs, songs meant to inspire and lift you up. Its not weird when one takes in the context.

Probably “Here I Am, Lord.” I sang it at my mom’s funeral… It was her favorite hymn.

Then the other two I mentioned above.

If you guys have any contemporary songs to suggest, I’m open. I mostly know only old school, churchy hymns.

Your question was directed toward non-religious people who like religious music. I’m a religious person who hates religious music–it’s too “preachy” for me.

Thanks for your input. I’d just like to know, in what way is it preachy?

music is music and no matter what it finds roots…. I personally float somewhere between Buddhism and Paganism, but some Christian music hits home….kinda…..not really, BUT!!! I do have respect and admiration for those songs of old. Namely stuff from the 1700’s but only the deep choral type stuff usually in another language generally Latin… but I digress… Music has a way of attaching itself to our psyche and triggering an emotional response. Any song can do it even Manson…( I dislike Manson )

I’m an atheist, but still miss the church music.

I went to Pentecostal church and my parents are in the band. People there know how to have a good time.

I am an atheist as of now…..and I do love them. They sound wonderful, and feel very nice. Although what “fills me up” and makes me content are Yiddish songs, sung by the Turkish Choir. I don’t know why, but I always feel very happy after I listen to them. :)

Help.com does not allow the less than sign in replies however HTML such as bold and italics and such do still work in shouts and the actual post.

Sam

Yeah, it didn’t work in my actual post. They removed the less than sign.

Those songs must give you comfort, plain and simple. Religiousness of the song doesn’t matter - you like it, it takes you to a place and time that must have had much ‘good’ in it. It doesn’t matter that you do or don’t believe in the message - the songs are inside you and part of you.

For years and years and years after I realized there was lo longer room in my life for organized religion I sang the beautiful songs simply because I new them. I don’t have a problem with the meaning or the joy in the songs, I have a problem with the organized religions.

Just some thoughts…

Richard Dawkins says he really enjoys Christmas music. So, you’re allowed to like Catholic music if you want.

Richard Dawkins? He’s an atheist, who wrote a book called “The God Delusion.”

I know who he is, I’ve read his books. I was asking if he likes secular or religious Christmas music.

I’m not certain, but I think he said he generally enjoys Christmas music. I don’t know if I’ve heard him name any songs specifically.

I can see how the hymns might do it for ya’. Hymns and Christmas tunes can hit me a little bit, but for the big shivers… gotta go for the ‘godless soul’. Stuff like Modest Mouse, the Shins, etc…
