Get Crafty: Hip Home Ec, by Jean Railla

This is a craft book with a mission — to bring women of all ages into a lifestyle that’s original, hand-made, and thoughtful. Author Jean Railla spent her 20’s living very un-domestically, with a demanding career, a busy social life, a diet of coffee and cigarettes, and a rather depressing apartment.

By age 28, she was ready for something new. She began to dabble in knitting and cooking. She turned her apartment into a cozy home. And she learned to embrace the meaning (and importance) of a creative, nuturing life.

Get Crafty is filled with great advice on building your nest, feeding yourself and your loved ones, finding new life in thrift-store scores, and creating quality time with your crafty friends. In short, this is a manual for living well by making stuff. You’ll also find craft projects including a knit bikini, homemade soaps and cleaning products, and a dynamite recipe for madelines. In addition, there are many great ideas for “craftivism” projects — ways to use your crafty skills to make a difference in the world. It’s a wonderful read, and will inspire you to add more and more making to your life.

In case there’s anyone left on the planet who doesn’t know this, Jean Railla is the founder of GetCrafty.com, a compendium of crafty ideas, and a community of people who share them.
