Pointless Rant II, please ignore

I’m starting to get really annoyed with people who can’t be bothered to type in English. I don’t mind people for whom English is not their first language - they’re making an effort. I don’t mind grammatical errors and accidental misspellings (much) this is a real-time site and we all type quickly - mistakes happen. I don’t mind standard abbreviations. What REALLY annoys me though is people with a working knowledge of English and a QUERTY keyboard who type in their own personal ‘shorthand’ for no better reason than to make all or part of their post unintelligible. IT WASTES MY TIME!

There I’ve vented now I feel much better (or should that be: “ther ivvntd nw I fel mch btr”)

LOL I get your point, it is annoying but I suppose in a sense that makes us, the ones who find it annoying, OLD ;)
It is a text shorthand, form what I understand of it, it is all rage in the younger ones but it does make you wonder how they get through school writing like that and what is to come of the future :S
It takes nothing to write in English and I would imagine it takes longer to type in text talk on a keyboared considering text talk is designed for phones and that is totally different to a computer, but hey, I just ignore most of those posts now.

AMEN! THANK YOU! I don’t understand it. It really doesn’t take much effort to type things out.

I tried to help in a post earlier, but couldn’t understand what the person was trying to say, so I just gave up. It was like they’d never heard of punctuation…

It’s mostly the anons and the unverifieds too.

Well, when I’m IMing someone then I type like that, not completely, though. Like, I shorten some words. Tho, kno, awsm, etc. And I basically type in lowercase. It’s all because we talk so fast, about nothing, mostly, but we latch onto a subject and we’re lucky if we don’t break our keyboards.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not demanding that people write in standard English all the time, you’re quite welcome to type how you want on IM. My gripe is that this is a public site where the readers of posts are trying to help the poster, I feel that they should make the effort to write in a real language not a mixture of garbled phonetics and ‘fasionable’ misspellings (using ‘z’ instead of ’s’ or ‘dd’ instead of ‘th’ for example.) It doesn’t help that grammar is often not factored into the writing, on another board I’m on I recently saw a quadrouple negative ‘I don’t not lack a dislike of’. People who write badly generaly don’t seem to realise that when they read their post through their head they are putting all the accents and inflections in the right place, if they type without punctuation those of us reading have to guess where it goes often leaving us with several different ways to read the post - if we can read it at all.
Anyway, as you can no doubt tell it’s still annoying me so I’ll leave it there before I start another rant. If your keyboard breaks I’ve found you another one at a good price ;)

I hate that! I always try to type in English and if someone does not get the hint, I tend to ignore them. Its hard not to look down on them. Some younger people have just grown up doing that. They also can’t focus on any one thing for more than 5 minutes. They need to be talking, texting, checking myspace, sending emails, all at the same time. It gets annoying.
