I’m reading “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe for homework.

We have to answers questions about it that I really don’t understand because I didn’t get the story.
Can anyone help me by giving me insight on the story??

Some of the questions:
-What does the narrator’s pretense at good will reveal about his character?
-Why does Poe devote so much time to establishing the details of the crypt? How is it linked to the plot?
-Give two reasons why the carnival setting is appropriate for Montresor’s plan and therefore the plot.
-Why does Fortunato begin to yell? What happens to Fortunato at the end of the story?

1) he is manipulative, a deceiver, devious,lier

2)he wants the reader to get a feel or envision wat it looked like in the crypt and how the narrator got the advantage to wall fortunato in the crypt. and he put the pile of bones in front of the wall so it wud look like it had been like that.

3)he could wear costume to conceal himself so no one will know it was him, and no one wud really notice their absence and everything was in chaos because most people would be drunk and will have no self control so if he was caught he could blame it on the canival. There is also noise in the streets, and the servants are gone so they can go to the catacombs unnoticed. fortunato is also drunk so he wont be able to realize the narrators plan until it was too late.

4)fortunato tries to yell because he is hoping someone will hear him and help him. he is pretty much buried alive.

sorry if any of this is wrong. i read it and answered it with what i thought.
hope this helped u =] (by the way the narrators name is Montresor)

I am doing exactly what you are doing i have the answer for the third question and here it is:
1)Because Montresor knows that the people at the carnival will bedrinking and having fun.
2)The noise of the carnival would prevent anyone from hearing cries for helps form Fortunato.
