What to do when someone gets mean online.

Here’s a GREAT site that all adults and young people should be aware of http://yp.direct.gov.uk/cyberbullying/

I had problems getting my post posted properly, so here’s a link to the full low-down. Bit long (sorry) but all the facts are there should you need them, wherever you may be in the world. http://help.com/post/209641-cyberbull...

Here’s the story of Megan anon. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Story?id=38… It was not a unique case by any means.. a lot of child suicides (and adult ones!) can be linked to online bullying.

However, the story raised awareness that laws were weak and something needed to change. Thanks to the determination of very ordinary people who refused to accept that nothing could be done, the perpetrators were caught.

Since then, new laws have been introduced and agencies set up to work worldwide to combat the problem. Moves were made to make it easier for cyberbullies to be tracked down and prosecuted. Educators are working hard to raise awareness of just how serious a problem this is.

Yes, that’s a good move Dani.

The first link shows what ELSE you need to do to make sure vulnerable people who don’t feel able to ignore don’t end up like Megan.

well then if someone doesn’t “feel able” to ignore maybe they should just stay off the internet

So tell me, what would you say to someone “vulnerable” who comes to a site like this for help via the internet because that’s the only way they can get help ?

“Tough? There are bullies here.. better stay away ?”

I’d tell them, There are no bullies here but there are troll’s and they feed off your sensitivity and if you can’t handle it then i suggest not come here

And as for Megan, she suffered from depression, suicide was more than likely going to happen for her sooner or later, her neighbor just fed it

A troll and a cyberbully are the same thing.

Yes, her neighbour pushed her over the edge. So it was ok for Megan to die that soon then? Is that what you’re saying? Death happens to all of us sooner or later so it’s ok to speed it along by bullying?

You know as well as I that there are bullies on here.

I think it would be a good idea if you explored http://yp.direct.gov.uk/cyberbullying/ a little more and looked into it in greater depth.

I don’t think you’ve understood the gravity of the concept yet.

No, I think trolls and cyberbullies are completely different, and I’m sorry I don’t need a website telling me about “cyber bullying” I already know about it from experience, and my best suggestion is that if your that sensitive to typed words, then maybe being online is not the best place for the person, perhaps seeing a real doctor

It’s not about being sensitive to typed words.

It’s about people typing words that can harm.

I guess you haven’t experienced the same trolls as some people have on here… maybe they were nice trolls that never paste anything nasty. I guess that comes down to your personal definition of what a troll is.

So. There are no cyberbullies on here then? (Let’s not use the word troll if it’s causing confusion)

None that I’ve witnessed nope
Look, we have a difference in opinion here
The internet can be a scary place just like the real world, the only difference is in real life its more hurtful because its to your face, with the internet you can just log off or hit the ignore button.
I was bullied in School, until one day i had enough and talked back and then it stopped, and now all growned up their the ones in and out of jail with 4583764857436 babies and 447653 dads

and bully’s are human too maybe they just need love

I’m glad you haven’t encountered any yet.

I have. So have a lot of people.

Like you I believe bullies need to be given a chance… only I adopt a different approach.

I try to educate them about why it’s wrong and the harm that it perpetuates.
I try to find out the root cause and help solve those issues so they don’t feel the need to bully.
If that doesn’t work, I show them the risks they take for themselves personally and the possible consequences for them.
If they choose to continue… I tell myself “I did my best to help. They now know what the risks are…it’s their decision if they want to do battle with the authorities as a result”.

That’s what my post is about.

In your case, talking back worked for you. We all have our solutions.

Here is a tip for anyone that plays games online and gets harrassing messages. I play Tiger Woods Golf online PS3 and when it happens to me I put them on my Block list immediately upon first harrassment.

That’s good advice green eyed lady. Thank you.

We tend to forget the power of a click to eliminate a bully.
