Year help: I’m having real difficulties with my psychology coursework for my A levels. - Help.com

I’m having real difficulties with my psychology coursework for my A levels.

I’m falling behind because I can’t find the infor mation that I need. I’m researching on oxytocin, I know its a weird topic but I didnt have alot of choice. One psychologist I researching, I coundn’t find any of her experiments or the years of them, she was called helen fisher I think. And I found Susan Carter and started to try to use her instead as finding her work looked more promising, I’ve found abit of info, but need the specific year and experiment which Is really difficult to find. I found some writing about one of her experiments, but I need to know the specific details of it. This is the experimental info I want to find out about,

“The groundbreaking work on oxytocin’s role in the brain was done by C. Sue Carter, then at the University of Maryland in College Park. She studied two closely related species of vole - prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) and montane voles (Microtus montanus) - which differ primarily in their reproductive behaviour. Prairie voles form long-lasting pair bonds to rear young whereas montane voles mate promiscuously and fathers do not contribute to parenting.

Carter discovered that the key to the different behaviours was oxytocin. Female prairie voles have many oxytocin receptors in their brains’ pleasure centres, while the males have lots of receptors for both oxytocin and a closely related hormone, vasopressin. In montane voles, however, there are far fewer receptors for oxytocin and vasopressin. When these receptors are blocked in prairie voles the animals do not form the usual pair bonds. Carter concluded that oxytocin released in the brain during mating bonds prairie voles to one other, making further contact with that partner pleasurable and separation stressful (Psychoneuroendocrinology, vol 23, p 779).

could anyone find out about this??? PLEASE lol my second draft should have been in last wed. which Im still not finished with now, I’m stuck. I’ve changed mine so much its more like a first draft. I need help. I’ve tried for hours on end to find this out but just cant.its like a giant loop hole. Please help. i’ve honestlytried for hours. She wants it in for tomorrow or friday
If you find out where the experiment can be found, would you put the website address down please. its 20past 1 am im still doing this, sigh…

Have u tried a real library and the readers guide to periodicals. Or google ebscohost. They have a ton of research databases on scholarly and peer reviewed journals

Hello there.

Let’s have a look at what you CAN do to get some of this stress off you.

Firstly, you say this is a second draft. Will you be able to submit a third before final copy? If so, you could do what you can to present your arguments, talk about the research and footnote that precise data has been difficult to track down. Put a post it on that page and make a note to your teacher that you have been researching extensively but not come up with specific data to back your argument in as scientific a manner as you would have hoped. Your project will be more theory, but at least it’s still sound.

If you don’t have the opportunity of a second draft, then you should work the lack of available data into your project as best you can. Try finding data that backs up some other aspect of your work if possible, so that you still gain evidence marks where you can.

She says “tomorrow” or “Friday”. That means there is some flexibility there. Give her something tomorrow if you can (that shows you are keen to meet deadlines but are simply struggling) but attach a note saying you are hoping to improve it further by Friday.

Make an appointment to meet her tomorrow and explain your difficulties. We’re a pretty reasonably breed when there are genuine reasons behind a problem! Or you could discuss this with your tutor who may have fresh ideas.

Above all, you must get rest or you will make silly errors and not be able to get your thoughts straight.

Tomorrow, you could look at some Uni sites and see if there are any lecture notes available on the topic. I’ll do a bit of fishing and see what I can come up. There may even be a student forum somewhere that you could access.

Exeter and Bristol are two key Universities with research departments in Animal Behaviour and Psychology. You might find a friendly professor who can point you in the right direction!

Good luck.

At the moment I’m working on tracking down not the study but the person… nothing like asking the original author if you can find them on a forum somewhere!

Not being much of a scientist, is this the study you are looking for?

In fact, I’m feeling quite warm and fuzzy at the look on this teacher’s face when she reads jetmoo’s post-it which says “I’m hoping for a call-back from C.Sue Carter with specific data and more information on this aspect”.

Oh boy would I LOVE to be in THAT staffroom! Hee hee.

It’s 8.10 pm in Chicago right now.. you could leave a message on her phone or email and she might pick it up in the morning. (My brain won’t function to figure out what time that would be in UK!)

Aren’t professors supposed to be the sort of people who scribble on blackboards and fiddle with testubes long into the night ? Parties?

I went to the wrong Uni!

I found a student Forum that would have been useful, but I needed an account and they wouldn’t give me one. I’ve sent her an email. Thanks for the link. I’d seen it before, but you get lost in these loop holes. Idon’t know she’ll reply but it is worth a try. That would be nice if she felt like that, but I thought that she may be too an important person or too busy to help with little matters like mine. Thats how I thought at the time, but i had a pretty bad week lol Thank you everyone. I did go to see my teacher on Thursday and she said it’s probs be ok, as long as I had the reference which I do. I’ve done the work and handed it it.and got it back again…even thought I’ve told her all this shestill wants to know the year of it so I guess I still need to find out, but its not as urgent now, cos I have a week off. That gives abit more time :) I’ll let you know how things go. thanx x
