girl help: Acne, since I was 10 years old. - Help.com

Acne, since I was 10 years old.

I am really fed up, I have had acne for ages.
I’m now 13, and It has ruined my childhood, now when I look back at my childhood it will be ‘I wasn’t a pretty girl, i had terrible acne’
I want out, seriously.
It’s been too long, I have been to doctors, they gave me Benzoyl Peroxide, they gave me 2.5% and then 5%, it has not helped at all.
My acne has caused me so much trouble, low self esteem, depression, anxiety.
I want it gone, I want to be pretty, I want to be able to get a boyfriend without being looked at as the ugly one.
I want help. Can anyone offer any good products?
Or any good routines?
Any foods that help?

Thanks so much. I really want it gone.

Products will only help once a proper diagnosis can be made. Which is the frustrating part. I found that most acne is caused by food allergies. Dairy products, including eggs, are usually the mail culprit. You can have food allergy tests done, though if you do not have a severe reaction the test most likely will be inclusive. Don’t get discouraged. You can test any food allergy theories without a doctor. Go two weeks, say without dairy in your diet and see if your skin has cleared up a good bit. You will really have to read all ingredients in what you eat to completely rid yourself of what you are testing. Milk is in McDonald’s fries for an example. If it is a food allergy then over the counter meds will not work to clear your skin well. If you go to the doctor for meds I suggest “Ziana”. It’s a topical antibiotic ointment that works really well, though there are a few side effects. It usually takes two weeks before you start to see good results. I hope this helps. Supa has great advice too.

Firstly, acne is uncomfortable and it doesn’t look great. I know. But I bet you still are a beauty and anyone that can’t see passed it isn’t worth your time. Secondly, have you seen a specialist, like a dermatologist? Doctors have an all round knowledge but don’t necessarily specialize in one particular area. It may even be worth considering seeing a herbal specialist too to weigh up your options. There are plenty of remedies that may help that a doctor would never even consider. I used a product called ‘Oreganol’, or something similar. It wasn’t cheap, it was STRONG as hell, but it worked. Thirdly, my skin was never unbelievably bad; it was my forehead mainly. I am still prone to getting the occasional few spots though. I wash my face in the morning and evening, but if I miss one it shows! Anyway, my point is that I had a friend who had terrible acne. He is so fair that it really showed up against his pale skin. But you know something, they just disappeared as he got older. He had acne for years, but then one day things just started to get better and now his skin is clear. I can’t explain it. Put it down to hormones. So there is hope whether you treat it now or wait it out. Incidentally, my friend may have had bad acne but he wasn’t short on friends, and myself similarly. Just don’t let it control your life.
So general advice, just keep your face clean by washing it every morning and evening and don’t let it dominate your life. I hope things improve for you.

Thank you. I just went to a normal doctor and they gave me a prescription.
Thanks for your post, I’m just about to research the products you mentioned. :D
Thanks. :)

I had acne so bad I had no skin on the right side of my face. It appeared when I was about 13 or so and I still have it slightly at the age of 21. Mostly caused by hormonal imbalances it was helped by going on the pill, but what also helped was changing my skincare. One of the best is actually everday normal Nivea cream, the one that comes in the small blue tubs. No irritants, and petroleum jelly based. Don’t use anything with salicylic acid in it. It’s ok in very small quantites but it irritates my skin soooo much. And also anything with alcohol in it as it dries your skin making it worse. Never wash your face too much to dry it out as this just aggrivates it more.

For the mental side of things I had no self esteem all the way throughout school, but I don’t know how anyone can have self esteem in school unless they started off very confident to start off with. School can be a soul destroying place for some people. It may be worth talking to a councillor, which can be organised through your gp. You are only what you tell yourself you are. If you keep telling yourself you are ugly and worthless of course you are going to think it! You’ve wired your brain into this way of thinking. With some councilling you will be able to help this. It may be worth having a hobby or after school activity that will increase your confidence. It’s all about personality. Smiling is probably the best thing you can do, even if it is in a mirror at yourself. Really stupid I know but it can help. If you smile with your head up to anyone then the acne will not be the thing they are focusing on, and if it is they are not worth knowing. You go girl! It is pain just now but what doesn’t kill you will only make you a stronger person later on.

I’m assuming you;re a girl by the way. We all want miracle cures that will make everything change in an instant, but anything worth having in life is not easy. It will take time and work and you’ll feel better in the end after talking about it to someone and getting help that way. Who knows, you’ll feel better about yourself, and maybe improving your diet will help, exercise too, you will feel better with little changes. Honestly, wish you all the best.

i’ve had acne since i was around 10 and still have it. i’m 21. yeah, it sucks alot and it is depressing at first. but what you need to change more than acne products is your attitude about it. people don’t think your ugly because of acne. in fact, people rarely notice or care about this. think about it. if you see a person at your school who has some acne do you stay away from them because of that fact? you probably don’t even take notice of it. self confidence is one of THE most attractive things to a man. if you show a guy “hey, my skin may not be perfect but i love myself and i’m beautiful the way i am” you’ll get just as many guys if not more than the so called beauties at your school. acne DOES get better with age as your hormones calm down. do the usual stuff. eat right, get plenty of rest, keep calm, and wash your face daily. and the medicine that has best helped me is called Oxy. hope this helps, hun.

Yeah, people may notice the acne, but they don’t think you’re an ugly person because of it. I thought everyone hated me but it was because my body language put people off. I’m working on it, I know with help I’ll get there. It’s like all these women who think ‘I need to be skinny with big boobs to get guys’. But, insecurity like that only attracts the wrong men. Men like confidence. Why don’t more women realise this? It’s because of media and magazines isn’t it? Lol. Lets just blame them…

I had the same problem. I was bullied a lot for being ugly because of my extremely bad acne my entire life, right until I turned 21. My dermatologist prescribed me a pill that changed my life, Diane 35. It cleared me in 3 months. I’ve been on it ever since. You’ll have trouble with the scars but then there are a lot of things you can do to improve them and its a **** great start. :-)My confidence improved, I learned to give as good as I get and I began getting substantial attention from boys.

Medications: There are a few, very few, medications that make acne worse. If your acne gets worse when you start a new medications consult your doctor for a substitute medication if at all possible. It can take months to recover from a full blown acne flair up.
Benzyl peroxide is an ingredient in most acne medicines that has been proven to help with mild to moderate cases of acne. The cheap ones are just as good as the expensive ones as long as they have benzyl peroxide in them.

Benzoyl peroxide according to the posts I’ve read, is so good in treating acne, but right now, I’m using a product which doesn’t have benzoyl peroxide but perfectly removes my acne. It’s naturally made, and you can’t experience any side effects.
I hope it would work on you as it worked on me!

If Benzoyl Peroxide has not worked I would consider antibiotics. Antibiotics work by decreasing the number of acne causing bacteria and reducing the irritating chemicals produced by white blood cells. They also reduce concentration of free fatty acids in the subum therefore reducing inflammatory acne.
