I am currently stuck in a situation that may be hard for some people to understand.

I have been having serious mental health issues for the past few years, I’ve shown improvement but not necessarily strides. I have been on various medications and currently I’m only on something caled methadone maintenance. This treatment is for people who got addicted to opiates (either prescription or illicit). I have been on this program for a few months and I have to attend everyday. The reason I’m on this medication is not important at this point because the protocol for coming off of it is the same for everyone whether they are a heroin addict or taking it for pain management, it requires serious downtime, hospitalization, etc. The big issue is that I am stuck here in New York City. I was living in NJ (where I’m from). I’m young, 24 and I don’t have family to live with back there, they simply don’t have room for me. I got a job here in NY and moved here about 2 months ago, the main reason being that this is where my program for the medication is located. I have been having such a hard time here, my depression is killing me, the job i have is barely affording me enough money to live. I’m short every month with rent. I need to move but I can’t figure out how. I don’t qualify for any social assistance because I’m currently working, but I know I can’t keep it up for long. I’m about to have a nervous breakdown. I really need to take some time off and get off this methadone program and get my depression straightened out, but I don’t know where to begin. I need an exit strategy. I’m scared that I’m going to end up in the hospital again, then I will lose my job anyway, but more importantly the only money I have is tied up in my secuirty deposit with my landlord and if I dissapear into a hospital I won’t be able to pay rent and then thats gone as well. I feel so overwhelmed and most people probably think I should just be able to toughen up, but I honestly have tried for the past 4 years and something is wrong.

Methadone treatment can make you feel sick and depressed and it is sometimes hard to determine if it is the loss of energy from the methadone or depression. Do whatever you can to slowly come off the methadone. I’ve seen it cause a lot of problems.
