I’m really afraid I’m going to fail a class and go on academic probation for next semester.

I have the worst professor, someone who seems more concerned with his own research than he does in teaching the class because he’s always out of town and even when he is here he doesn’t explain the concepts. And my TA might be the worst on campus; she only knows how to answer homework questions that she’s prepared - anytime anyone asks her a question on a difficult problem (say, one that will be on the exam) and she gets stumped and tells us to go elsewhere. She also actually came out and actually said that if we did bad on the first midterm (which I did) we would do worse on this one (which is tomorrow). They both seem like fantastic people but horrible teachers.

I’ve been studying hard for the past couple weeks, but I can’t seem to grasp the concepts and I feel like I’m going to do just as bad or worse on this midterm. The good news is that the class is heavily curved (I got a 50 last time and it was a C), but I think I’m going to do worse tomorrow.

Anyone have any good advice for having a horrible professor and still getting by in a class?

Been there, done that. Took quite awhile to build up my grade point average afterwards, too.

Is it too late to drop the course?

Yeah, it’s too late, which sucks. I do plan to see if I can switch TA’s but that might not fit my schedule.

I teach in a university, and I can tell you heaps of people go on probation and then end up with good degrees. It’s not the end of the world. It’s a bit late now for extra tutoring etc, but next time, try to link up with someone else so you can check each others’ work and explain thing to each other - you’ll be surprised how much you know, and sometimes another person’s explanation can make everything clear in no time.
Next semester try to get a different lecturer, and if you get caught with the same one be proactive early on to get extra support from uni or friends.
Hang in there - it’ll be okay in the end.
