There are two types of diabetes Type 1 (Insulin Dependant or juvenile diabetes mellitus) or Type 2 (tablet or diet only / onset diabetes mellitus which happens with older people). I’m also a Type 1 diabetic myself - have been for over 11 years so any questions feel free to ask away!

It’s actually my son that I’m a bit concerned about. I mean I could be over reacting, I don’t know.

Just tonight he has been excessively thirsty, irritable, and has stomach pains and kind of cold/flu type symptoms. I read on a few web sites that these can be symptoms of childhood diabetes, and that it can be sudden onset.

I’m going to take him to my GP in the morning to get checked out, just to be on the safe side. I’m a bit worried.

Excessive thirst, losing weight, tiredness and going to the toilet more frequently are all signs of Type 1 diabetes. Yes the best thing is to get him checked out by the GP who will perform a simple blood test by pricking his finger.. if his BG (blood glucose) is higher than the normal range then they will diagnose him as a Type 1 diabetic.

Sorry I meant to say they are all signs of ‘untreated’ Type 1.. after insulin treatment he won’t have these symptoms. However he might not be diabetic as I say get the GP to diagnose it. I can help with advice or if not there are plenty of forums available and of course he will be referred to a diabetic specialist who will guide him through the condition.

Childhood Diabetes..

Has anyone in your family had any experiences with child hood diabetes ? I know the main symptoms are excessive thirst, frequent urination and weight loss, but apparently there can be other symptoms that vary greatly. Any info at all would be great.
