differentiate using the product rule maybe?
let (x^1/2) = u and (1+x^1/2)^-1 = v
then do v(du/dx) + u(dv/dx)

yeah I tried the product rule, all I got was gibberish same with the quotient rule.
It’s a online multiple choice question the answer is one of:

a)1 b) 1/ 2x^1/2 (1+x) c) 1/ 2x^1/2 (1+x)^2 d) 1+2X^1/2 / 2x^1/2 (1+x^1/2)^2

So far I’ve got no where near these and have spent 6 sides of A4 :(

Yeah this one is pretty messy and ultimatley I couldn’t figure it out. I hate giving just the answer, but I’ve spent over half an hour on this: I entered the function at this website: http://wims.unice.fr/wims/wims.cgi?mo… and got:
1/(2x - x^(1/2)) - 1/(2(x^(1/2)+1)^2)
Which I don’t see quite lining up with any of the given choices. But I plugged in a value for each choice, and choice ‘d’ is correct. I also tried the quotient rule and the product rule, but didn’t have any luck.

(x^1/2) (1+x^1/2)^-1
Is the same as:
(x^1/2)/(1+x^1/2)

Using the quotient rule with (f’(x)*g(x) - g’(x)*f(x))/(g(x))^2:
(.5*x^(-1/2)(1+x^(1/2)) - .5*x^(-1/2)*x^(1/2)) / (x +2x^(1/2) + 1)
Even though this looks right to me, it’s not. I’m not exactly sure why, but it doesn’t.
