Is my job taking advantage of me?

So I am 19 and I have been with my current job since June 2006 (when they first opened). That’s when they first opened their doors (I even help move in equipment and such things before the opening). SO I was 17 when I started at the job I have gotten nearly perfect reviews on everyone I receive; in fact they have stopped reviewing my performance formally. When I was 17 the amount I was being paid was ok but now 2+ years later I have only received a 50 cent raise…..

Here is what I do:
- I help hire/train new employees
- I count down the till and make bank deposits
- I will run out to the stores if we need supplies
- I make everyone’s work schedule and post it
- I do inventory
- Help with Marketing
- Run daily reports and stuff of that nature
- I also work at a minutes notice, incase an employee calls out. For example we open at 10 there have been times where I was called at 9:30 to open; I was there and opened. There have been times where I have had to open to close (10am –9pm)…I have done that every Saturday for the past 3-4 weeks.
- Basically whenever something needs done I am the one asked to do it….

Through this time I have not received a bonus, only 50-cent raise over the past 2 years, and to top it all off I do not receive any kind of “benefits” such as health or anything like that. I probably work everyday except 1 day a week. I also attend college

Also I have asked for raises many times but it seems as though every time I ask; my performance is not where it should be. But the thing is I am ALWAYS being told “good job” etc… not once have I ever been told “you need to do this better”(only when I ask for a raise)

Also I have not been appointed Asst. Manager or anything of the sort
So does it sounds like I am being taken advantage of at my current place of work? If so, what should I do.

Also, recently the corporate office was having a manager’s certification program in my area. They wanted me there they notified him over 3 weeks ago but he somehow “forgot” to tell me

( I should quit but with the current economy, I think that would be a bad decision)

no offense, but I didn’t read past “so I’m 19″

yes, your job may be taking advantage of you. Unless any of the thing below include “and also, they don’t pay me”, then now is not the time to switch jobs.

feel free to search for a new job as long as you tell any new employers that they can’t contact your current employee.

any money is good money for the next few months!

(if it does include they don’t pay you..then why are you asking this?)

If the amount of work you do and your skill level is worth more than you’re making, then someone out there will be willing to pay you more. Either way, you have agreed to work for the pay you’re receiving, so no, they’re not taking advantage of you.

Keep applying, you may find something better. Monster, Yahoo Hotjobs, Careerbuilder are some of the largest job boards, where you can apply for jobs and upload your resume. Since Craigslist, allows free job postings, many smaller companies post their vacancies on this online classifieds website. You can also search for jobs from multiple websites using aggregators like SimplyHired and Indeed. Referrals also are becoming a increasingly popular way to get hired.
