An Appeal

Our 19 year old daughter-Shaonti Samanta suffers from a very rare and critical neurological disorder resulting in wasting of her muscles; since the disease affects her cardiac muscles as well, she developed acute cardio-respiratory distress and had to be admitted in the AMRI Hospitals (Emergency Ward, Dhakuria) on Sat. 16th August 2008 under Dr. Subhasis Ghosh- Chest Physician. She has since been visited by a cardiologist, E.N.T. specialist, surgeon, critical-care specialist on quite a few occasions. Since admission she was in the TITU (Trauma Intensive Therapy Unit) on invasive ventilator system for over sixty days. However, on improvement of her condition she has been shifted from TITU to a single-occupancy room and is currently on non-invasive BiPap system.

The attending physicians suggest that Shaonti should be transferred to ‘home management system’ with non-invasive ventilator support as and when her medical condition is conducive to it. However, her hospital expenses have till date crossed Rs. 8.5 lakhs, another Rs. 2.00 lakhs have gone towards medicines/pharmacy bills. For home management we have been given to understand that we would require to invest on the following:-

• A non-invasive ventilator support machine, preferably BiPap Synchrony, costing around Rs.2,00,000/-
• An oxygenator estimated to cost Rs. 50,000/-
• An inverter/UPS system to cost Rs. 25,000/-
• An I.C.C.U. cot to be rented at Rs. 300/- per day
• A Nimbus bed to be rented at Rs. 600/- per day
• Round-the-clock trained nurse and frequent doctor’s visit.

Shaonti is a very intelligent and diligent student now enrolled as a 1st Year B.A. English (Hons) student in Lady Brabourne College having passed the Indian School Certificate Examinations from Modern High School this year under very trying circumstances and acute difficulties on account of her muscular weakness securing nevertheless over 84% in best four subjects. Our elder son has just sat for his Masters’ and is awaiting the results.

Procuring all the above equipment and services over and above paying the hospital and pharmacy dues is beyond our humble means as both my wife and myself are Asst. Teachers in Govt. aided schools living in a rented accommodation. We have, as evident, exhausted all our savings. We very humbly and earnestly request you to kindly stand by us in this hour of crisis and help to allow a very loving and bright young girl to live with dignity as long as she survives.

Any cash assistance may be remitted to our savings bank account (number removed) and we could be contacted over phone on (number removed) respectively.

Yours faithfully,

Prasanta Samanta
