What wood would compliment oak?

Im making a wooden lamp in school and im using two woods, one of which is oak. What other, lighter in colour wood could i use?

pine is not the most stable wood,,maple is a excellent choice,not a big fan of oak
as its kinda grainy ,mahogany works well,,as poplar mills great,it just has alot
of color variations,,,good luck on your project,as it will be enjoyed for a lifetime.
