To anybody who is smart with computer stuff and can translate.

Please make sense of this stuff and translate it into real english (dumb people english).

Connection speeds are quoted only in reference to IEEE standards. The speeds quoted are the maximum attainable under ideal environmental conditions and at close distances. In addition, the standards specify usable payload data rates that are less than half the connection speed. Your usable connection speed will be significantly lower than the IEEE standards quoted.

When selecting your wireless network standard, keep the following guidelines in mind:

The 802.11a standard offers the same speed as 802.11g. A 5-GHz band (802.11a) is also less susceptible to interference from common devices, such as 2.4-GHz cordless telephones, cell phones, and microwave ovens. Further, in areas where neighboring wireless networks can be detected, interference can be a problem. Because of the limited number of channels and the popularity of 2.4-GHz networks, a 5-GHz network is likely to experience less interference from a neighboring wireless network than a 2.4-GHz network and provide a better overall wireless connection. Although a 5-GHz network offers many channels, 802.11a networks are not widely supported by other devices that you may also want to add to your network, such as laptop computers.
An 802.11g wireless network is compatible with both 802.11g and 802.11b devices. However, any 802.11b devices operating on your 802.11g network will slow it down. If you have a dual-band router (with both 802.11a and 802.11g bands), try using your Xbox 360 console and wireless network adapter on the 802.11a band and your other devices on the 802.11g and 802.11b bands. The Xbox 360 console in this configuration will have the maximum bandwidth while remaining networked with other devices on 802.11g or 802.11b.
If you use wireless controllers, you may get better performance using 802.11a (5-GHz band) for your network connection, since the wireless controllers operate on the 2.4-GHz band.

Basically it says you should use your xbox on the 802.11a band.

I don’t know. I think it has a lot to do with your hardware. The first thing to make sure of is that your router supports 802.11a. If it does support that, you’ll also have to configure it.

You’ll also need the 802.11a adapter for the xbox.

Well it connects every once and a while but only after I try reconnecting it like 50 times. And some times just not at all. So it’s not like it never works. It just sucks

Is the problem solved by moving them closer together?

I haven’t tried moving them that close but with the layout of my house it would be way too inconvenient to play it anywhere else than my room. And the router is directly above my room. And I don’t know exactly what a media center PC is. But if it has something to do with the main computer connected to the router connects all the other wireless stuff then yes

Two things. 1) What router do you have, and (2) what xbox wireless adapter do you have?

1) A verizon Actiontec. MI424-WR Rev. D 2) The adapter is a legit xbox 360 brand wireless network adapter.

I guess just from the workers at verizon and/or my dads business friends I’m not the best with computers and my parents are completely oblivious so we have my dad’s intense tech guy get most of our stuff. But I think verizon just gave us the router when we moved. (Like 2 months ago.)

Can you provide the links. I’m not quite 100% sure it is a wireless router.

That doesn’t support the 802.11a band.

You can always get the money to buy a 802.11a router. That creates all new problems I suppose. Your low speeds might be related to an improper configuration of the xbox and or the router, but I’d move them closer first to see if that helps. I understand if it’s not feasible for playing, but if the distance is the problem, you’d know what you need to fix.

Haha and if the distance turns out to be the problem then what exactly can I do to fix it?

I think you can buy a signal booster. That might fix the problem and be cheaper than going in for a whole new router.
