Mind help: America’s reputation - Help.com

America’s reputation

Okay there will always be cultural differences (and jokes about them turning up late for wars) but as I was growing up The United States of America had an enviable reputation in my mind (although I was always annoyed by their habit of calling their president ‘The Leader of the Free World’.) A land of personal freedom, industrial sucess, accountable government & huge wealth. Not without it’s problems and idiosyncracies but basicaly a ‘good’ country. Now I’m starting to see things slightly differently: greed; corruption; torture; repression; violence & a habit of going to war a bit too soon to name a few issues. Looking at the history book there have always been these elements there, but in what quantity? Did that America I grew up hearing about ever exist? Has it become worse or am I just getting less naive?

I’d say both, when most other Western nations were in a weakened state from war or economic turmoil, the US was strong. The US was able to assist financially and militarily in several notable historic incidents, while it didn’t contribute more than other nations had, it did so from a position of strength and solidarity. Also, the US had acquired a celebrity status, as the newcomer, as the flourishing gem of North America, it advanced in leaps and bounds and for a time was at the very cutting edge of philanthropy, science, space exploration, research, philosophy, etc.

So, we have a newcomer that acheives celebrity status, that is known to be on the cutting edge of exciting advancements, and that made notable contributions to assist other countries out of troublesome situations.

This leads to a mythos, a body of beliefs about America that weren’t necessarily true. However, since the US internalized these myths, they started to behave in accordance. As the world believed them to be courageous and reputable, so they believed. With the power of this honorable reputation, the mainstream culture shaped itself to be worthy of the myth.

Well, the celebrity newcomer is a bit haggard now, after some bouts of addiction and some serious lack of exercise… we are like a prize-winning fighter stepping into the ring after years of easy living. We’re getting our @$$ handed to us and just can’t understand why! We became lazy, and even lazier people took advantage of our laziness to skim off the top, using corrupt means to gain power.

Hopefully America realizes we are no longer the charming celebrity we once were. We need to get into rehab, get off our @r$3$ and stop allowing others to take advantage of us while we lazily lay about basking in our former glory.

that “America” is every social group large enough to be considered a nation since the beginning of mans terrifying reign on earth. look in every one… each history is will leave you shocked and horrified if anyone ever put them to the standards of current societies… my worries are not in what we are doing as a collective group though… i am scared by what most of us are becoming individually…
