How do I convince my parents…

….

My problem is that I love music. Looking back, its the one thing that has stayed consistent in my life. I have been playing one instrument or another for as long as I can remember, but over the years I thought I wanted to be several other things such as a graphic designer. Over the summer I realized that I was kidding myself all along, and now I know that I want to be a professional musician. That’s only half the problem though. Currently I am going to a college to study network security, which I basically have no interest in. My parents know about my interest in music, but they want me to get a degree in something “safer.” I need to convince my parents to let me study music at another college, preferably my ideal school would be the Musicians Institute.

Wow! Thats pretty cool. I wish I could get some of my music out there. And that’s part of the reason I’m in this predicament.

I guess you should talk with your parents about how music makes you happy & how much you want it to be your way of life. Maybe they agree with you, but if they don’t, you can always make a deal. One of my best friends was in a similar situation, so he talk with his parents about he wanted to study music instead of engineering
(his parents think the same about how you need to study something “safer”), so, my friend is studying both at the same time. It’s a lot of work, but in his case is working really good. He’s just in the middle of engineering (cause he is taking it slowly) & next year he will be a out of a famous music school….

I could, but the other problem that I have is that I really just can’t see myself doing any other career. Sometimes I’m not even sure that I have what it takes to be a professional musician. The one thing that I know is that it is the thing that I love the most, and it is a dream of mine.

The Musicians Institute is also in another state. Which makes things a little difficult.

Yea, I’m not exactly sure what I am doing but the current plan is to finish up college within three years and then go back to school for a second degree. If you’re into music too I would consider checking out a degree in digital video. Thats what I am trying next semester, a ton of musicians love it.

I think you should double major in music and a trade at a school that’s good at both–maybe not MI, but somewhere good. Then, you can world towards being a musician, but if it doesn’t work out, you can always do the trade. It’s extra work, but it’s probably worth it. I’m in a similar predicament (with writing though, not music) but I eventually realized that since writing requires no degrees or anything, I can always go for it as a career, even if I don’t have a degree in creative writing. I can choose a more ‘practical’ major just in case.
