Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
Top 5 replies changed to top 20 replies ? There are some users who have excellent replies and a lot of them. Even if it was in a box with a scrollbar so it didn’t take up too much room.
I love it
But I think have the activity thing have it so you can go back further
And also have expandable quotable replies :D
well the orange is a tad in your face…
i dont think id change anything. changing it to top 20 replies would make it pretty huge…..
people he means your own personal profile page.
well of course weeeeeeee know, we know everything

Change:
Making adjustments to the server, to help with lag?
Make the TOU more clear, and if you amend them make it widely known.
Fix canned responses to some of the repetitive “problem posts.”
“Popular post” can you make that so it’s more related to the tags/fields you are actually interested in?

Helpbot
i like that the top replies are there, because i like the personalization of the profile page. the top voted replies tells you a few things about the poster.
i like that you can find out a few thing about other users, to see if they are trolls or if they are contributing members of help.com
honestly, i wish there was just a little more customization,
but it would be a little harder to monitor profile pages on top of everything else, so i don’t know how credible that suggestion is.

I would like a profile description box separate from the blurb box.

Anything specific about your user profile page…?
oh, perhaps a flag straight from a profile page, so you can just report a profile, rather than post after post from trolls.

brilliant. a way to report entire profiles.

I like the blurb. I think it says a lot about a person. I don’t have any particular dislikes about the profile page at all.
Maybe the interests/experience feature could be enhanced in some way? I know there are a lot of people out there with very specific knowledge and it would be good to be able to find them quickly to help with questions. At the moment I tend to have to rely on my memory “ah yes, fred knows about plumbing…” and “mary had some great ideas for this once”.
Being a not-very-teccie person, I have no idea how I would go about that though!

haha. Except smarter maybe, please—thnx.
The ability to remove previous names would be nice I suppose. But then it would also be confusing keeping track of people who change names and avatars on a regular basis.
Also, on the “Main” page of my User Administration, it has said, “You have completed 7 of 8 account steps,” since the day I’ve joined, and it confuses me. Not serious, but just confusing.

lol yeah
Hrm, perhaps I should READ. *shrugs*
My profile? Please don’t make this like myspace or facebook. The more CRAP you have on there, the more it’ll lag the servers. Although a “so-and-so is…” message thing would be neat, it seems like it’d be more of a pain to monitor than anything else.
I think all these questions could be taken out, and it could be suggested that people post what they would like to in the “about me section”. A lot of the users are young or they just don’t use the location anyhow. So why even mention it?
Where did you grow up?
Where do you live now?
What is the highest level of education you have attained?
What subjects did/do you enjoy the most at school?
What’s your favorite sport or sports?
What kinds of jobs have you held? Industries too!
Which religion (if any) do you follow?
The Hobbies and Personal concerns, as this is a ‘help site’ seems completely reasonable questions.
Although I like my little icons, some users seem to have a hard time grasping them—like how long a user has been around etc.
It’d be neat if you could flag your own posts, ones you liked—or thought were helpful. Like when others nominate you. Also if you wanted to get back to that post it’d be easier.
Hmm… wouldn’t mind making it more personal (different backgrounds etc)
And yeah, the “You have completed 7 out of the 8 account steps” is rather annoying, everytime you sign in.
Other than that, I wouldn’t change anything.

and what mas said:
‘When I was new I didn’t like being asked about my politics or religion. I still think that people can use this as a bias against you in arguments. I’d prefer to be able to debate without those labels.’
can we have those two tags taken off the profile thingy?
(sorry, not clever enough to use [quote]] tags)
off topic but i dislike when you get rids of friends their still there as fans
I’ve got that used to it, as it is. I dont think it matters a lot. Sorry not to be more helpfull.
I just specify this is for the new profile page, so your suggestions don’t have to be limited to what is there now.
reading yourabi’s shouts i’ve determined he’s not getting rid of chat and apparently mas was misinformed
as for the profile page i don’t really see a change in need, i barely look at people’s profile, maybe just get rid of orange
Per Chat, it’s not that Mas was wrong or misinformed — I wasn’t very clear with my intentions, and I also reserve the right to change my mind at times.
So it really comes down to me not being very clear.
At me, what’d I do?
I agree with these suggestions..

Politics and religion will come out as identifiers if the person has an interest in these. No need to prejudice those who would help the user beforehand.

My last 5 posts are not necessarily my 5 best, or the ones that best reflect who I am. Even with 20 you have the same problem. What if instead of the latest 5 our profile showed our most important 5 as determined by us.

There are already enough “popularity contest” post such as “who is your favorite user?” People can always express their appreciation in shouts. With so many seeking understanding and acceptance here, anything that heightens their sense of being alone or unpopular would not help.

In marketing there are certain color combinations that are more attractive than others. Primary colors rule. Companies that use red, blue and to a lesser degree yellow are most often the market leaders. (A rare exception is shipping where FedEx uses bluish-purple and orange, and UPS is brown.) Notice Coke is red and white, Pepsi is red, white and blue, McDonald’s is yellow and red, and so on. Also, certain colors create different atmostpheres. On a site dedicated to helping so many who are depressed, dark colors would be.. depressing, red would evoke anger or blood. A medium or light blue would be by far the most soothing. Plus, orange is the color of my three least favorite football teams–Florida, Clemson and Tennessee.
I think there is more important things to be done than the profile page.
Such as revising the TOU etc and making very set and clear rules/guidelines for users so that we can see clearly what the rules are and what the mods are having to keep to etc.
But with the profile page-would be nice if we could pick a theme/colour and our own font etc?
and I think it would be nice to get rid of all these questions we are asked.

too many cutters about for deep red. Green or blue would be great. Blue is more marketable if that’s a consideration.
im going to make a list of all the suggestions as of yet that i think are good, and maybe a few of my own.
the profile questions could be slimmed down. maybe dont ask where people live, only what country, maybe some others, but not all are necceessary. which to cut out? im not sure…
• less profile questions
its important that you can see what people are previously named as. this makes it hard to change your name just to troll people.
• keep previous names, unchangable.
i find that having recent replies is good, because i can often find interesting conversations by noticing what my friends are saying.
• recent replies should stay.
i like the idea of recent activity, but feel that it takes up a bit of space and doesnt need all that much…
i dont know how i feel about that.
i think that there should be a flag on peoples profile page.
• flags, profile pages
the topic of user set backgrounds is an interesting one. i can easily see some users making it look very tacky, or even offensive… on the other hand it could be far more interesting.
all in all, i think it would help people be more comfortable with getting into this community.
• backgrounds on profile pages - more customization in some form or another, so we can be more unique.
• expanding and collapsing boxes will help organize things
• important to be able to easily attain some information about the user in general, easy access to shoutbox and other things that may be on the new site, for that user.
if we are keeping the blurb functionality, it would be nice if it was separate than the profile information…
Verum Causa wrote:

some sentences pop up out of context and thats not always cool…
• separate blurb and profile information if we have blurbs in the new site.
i dont have any great excellent suggestions for the profile page, but i do have one or two great ones for the rest of the site…
im going to collect more if people add good ones…

The thing I love about help.com is how it is so unlike myspace or facebook !!
Stupid applications & such do my head in !!
I like the fact that the profile page is quite simple and clear. One of the reasons I don’t use MySpace (especially)or Facebook is their complexity. Too much info right in your face(pun intended). And with the pictures and flashing and the flashing, did I mention the flashing….? Too much.
The activity bar needs a title for each of the activities, I assume it is posts at the top and replies underneath, but that is just a guess. So you could clarify that please.
I would also like to see the full friends rather than ‘X has 43 friends, here are 30 of them’. Put them all up as there seems to be room.
Friends, if you remove them from your friends list, I would like to see them removed altogether rather than still as a ‘fan’. But as that relies on the other person as well, not sure if that would work.
But to me, there is one major thing lacking from this site. But I have no idea whether it should be on the front page of the site or on your profile page.
Could there be a link to mods somewhere? When I first joined the site I had no idea WHO the mods were or HOW to contact them. I had no idea where to start as I didn’t know them. Especially if you want to talk to a mod re an issue with the site without reporting someone. The only way seems to be asking around or making a post. Then you still need to find them. I still see new people making posts that are basically ‘are there any mods here, hey I need to talk to you’.
So I would like to see a list of mods on the site, with a link to their shoutbox. I think that would make it so much easier for people. With a green/red so we know if they are on site.
Or thinking about it, even a link that is just for ‘mods’ in general and whoever is on picks it up. What do you think Yourabi?
Thanks, and that is the sort of thing (looking nice and tidy) we need on the site.
Postng links to accounts is not a great idea — as they can change at any time. I’ll add the feature Anubis is asking for.
I also would like to debate the idea of being able to remove your own reply.
How many times has someone written in anger (drink haha) etc, pressed the send button, then instantly regretted it? I have seen it happen a few times, and done it once or twice myself. It also saves being reported, and ruining your reputation and record.
Only your own replies or course, not any other persons.
Should it be all replies you have made? I’m not sure about that.
What about just your last reply - so you have a short preiod of ‘grace’ to ‘recall’ the reply?
Worth thinking about, and the consequences or course.
yourabi wrote:

Thanks Yourabi, I’m thrilled at that.
I know it’s not the profile page, but please could i also suggest this:
Inviting friends to a post. Ticking each box can take forever, can it be made easier to collectively select them all?
Thanks

also something like a top friends, only because the people i talk to most are the ones who i usually invite to posts.
Like mas has said, don’t have the religion or politics, there, somewhat like the votes have ten best replies, give you more power over comment’s (shouts) like something with bebo and the comments, when you visit your profile page, you see your friends latest posts, as sometimes friends don’t invite everyone and a friend mightn’t know about it until it is too late.

I did make such a post so maybe Yourabi could integrate that?
I like it, its straight to the point and can give you a little insight of what kind of person your looking at. The one thing I dislike is… Avatar history, cause me for one I have some embarrassing pics of my self on there lol that I thought I\’d upload for about an hour and remove it to never be seen again, and when someone told me how to view someone avatar history I was like \”ARhhhg… people can see that!\” Maybe instead a little folder of pictures you would like to share.
Oh one more thing… The ability to remove your own and only your own posts.
The trouble with being able to remove your own posts (though I confess there have been some I’d love to have wiped!) is that it is open to abuse. It would allow trolls and abusive users to post a reply for effect and eliminate the evidence before a mod had a chance to intervene. I think it would make the mod’s job 10 times more difficult than it already is.
I’d like to echo other requests here for clearer definitions of what constitutes a breach of the TOU in moderator’s eyes. How do we define “abuse” for example in TOU 1?
Something that is lacking.. is an iggy button. Oh how I would love to just zap a couple of trolls with an ignore facility whilst waiting for a mod to com online.
Finally..
I’m still waiting for the new teamaker to arrive. It’s becoming quite a chore having to leave the screen to go and get my own! :)
i think we should have a top 10 replies AND the ability to make entire posts quotable, and have a top 5 posts.
Add music, youtube video player to your profile, or would that be too myspace?

Have different styles of Profile layout, but a limited number, not make it so you can make an awful puke of colors, different text styles and colors, and designs.

To quote Teddy Roosevelt, “And for my next trick, little pink monkeys are going to fly out of my ***!”
Just not tacky designs that make the text hard to read or slow down the server.
Speaking of site aesthetics and formatting, has anyone noticed that we all got bored with animated gif avatars and we’re back to static ones?

No, it’s because the gif’s HAD to be 256×256 to work, most people didn’t have the patience to make new ones…
Some of us are still struggling to cast on in this complex fairisle sweater-knitting of cyberspace…..
Aren’t they all 256 x 256? Or does the site reformat them?
sansceriph wrote:

yes, static ones get ferormated, moving gifs get too, but they don’t work when reformated, only if they are nativelyy 256×256.
Got it. I always reformat anyway, not that I change my av often.

not understanding why this couldnt happen… i mean… if you write it… then why cant you delete it… we are given permission to close the post when we get our answers.. so why not?
i personally dont have an opinion about the profile page.. a change would be neat.. my main concern with this entire site is that we have people taking care of this site who use their ‘powers’ to reprimand people that arent close to them… and even will boot those people.. but their friends are allowed to stay with out warning or getting booted themselves… i believe that if a mod can not follow TOS rather than sticking up for their friends.. then maybe the mods need to be changed…
If we were able to delete our own replies, I’d want the mods to still be able to see them or else there could be some issues with people saying nasty things then destroying the evidence.
This being said, I would like to be able to remove posts attributed to ourself from the profile page. I have heard of people making new accounts to rid themselves of posts they are not proud of, but they didn’t post anon.
One of my top posts I would also like to remove form my profile because I am not proud of it and although it was in context in the discussion, two people voted for it and now I cant rid myself of it.
I don’t think there should be videos or music in the profiles, just the basic information. It is a profile, not a personals page. I hope this makes sense.
Personally, I think it’s perfect. I might like to be able to scroll through all of the favorited replies, but I haven’t ever had a problem with it.
Just off the top of my head…I don’t know if this has been mentioned or not but I would like to be able to see who people’s friends are when you roll over the avatars on their friends list and to be able to click on them to go to their profiles. (since people change their pictures and names so often I think this would be useful).
I also see no point in tags and wish it wouldn’t tag you automatically. I also think it would be useful to be able to delete your own posts. I also think that only mods should be able to edit posts. I’d also prefer if there were no ‘moving’ avatars as too many just gets a bit crazy seeing them all in chat.
Modding suggestion… Some form of auto record that can show us mods exactly how many warnings, mutes, bans, etc a profile has had. That way it would be much easier to know if someone was warned by another mod. Some people get away with a lot of warnings while others get band after 2 incidents. All because the first got caught by each mod and the second was caught twice in a row by the same mod.
I like some of the other suggestions here. I don’t often look at the profile page for anything other then modding tho…
It would be good if shouts were private (only the account holder could view them). Otherwise you might as well use the chat room.
I’m pretty happy with this site at the moment, but there’s the odd modification I would like to see, many of which have already been mentioned.
I don’t agree with users being able to delete their own posts and replies. If you want them to be private, then reply/post as an anon. I would like to be able to view all my top rated replies. I read someones reply talking about using the colours green and blue. I quite like that idea. I also like the idea of having links to the Mods pages.
NEW IDEA! instead of the little banner above your posts that randomly takes tidbits out of your profile should, instead you should have a dialogue box in your profile that you can choose what the banner says.

he already has one.
I like the third one.
I want the option of dual-wielding epic banhammers when the mods are away. It gets exhausting distracting all the trolls from f**king with people night after night.
A far less important thing I’d like to see, shout trails in real time.
I don’t know if anyone suggested a mass invite button, but I’m torn on it. I like the idea, but I think it could be very easily abused. Maybe users could only use it if they had more than a certain number of friends?
Also, a more selfish thing, can someone remove the “dead account” name from my profile? It’s from when someone hacked my account, and I was told it would be worked on. I know things have been hectic, and I’m not upset or anything, but I thought I’d bring it up again just because I’m sure something of such little consequence has been forgotten.
Perhaps for the invite bomb button, have a user list on your profile for it and you put specific users in it. Even when I have massed invite, there was only one time I invited everyone. I think about who I am inviting and if I think they would be interested in joining the posts.
Bogdan, I love that idea.
Xeno…. That sounds VERY D&Dish. Or even Hackmasterish.
I agree with Jeb … let us choose our own backgrounds. It’s not that this one is bad… its just boring lol :P Oh well but that’s pretty random there are more important things like :
You can only close a post and edit it, you cant fully delete it .
I also wish you could block some/ all people from editing your post.:(
You can’t edit replies.
You cant delete replies either.
I second the user who said there should be a “invite all” button, it gets annoying especially if you have lots of friends .
That’s about it :)
Just to manage expectations : it is unlikely that people will be able to set their own backgrounds.
A) It opens up one more thing for mods to watch (people uploading obscene backgrounds)
B) Will make the site ugly like MySpace.
