It seems as it is like a club only on a slightly larger scale.

Ultimately a sorority/fraternity is a way for people to feel like they belong.

For some people they have the mistaken impression that one most join one of these clubs to get the full experience of college.

They act like most any social club; they meet, have parties, have functions create new laws for them selves to follow. That sort of thing

Something like that, it also seems something like a class committe, like a class president and treasurer, something similar but not quite to that degree.

They are Greek letters. Most college sorority/fraternity use Greek letters to name them selves.

Not really sure except sometimes they also call themselves omega and alpha also. It’s probably to make the group name sound stronger.

Sorry, I know this isn’t very helpful.

well maybe I am not stating that correctly.

the letters could stand for something; but they don’t spell anything.

So the sorority could attribute a motto to the letters. And so then it would mean something, but it would only mean something to them.

So while three different societies could use the letter phi in their name, it could stand for just about anything.

The greek letter dont necessarily mean anything. However alot of sororities use it as a way to number themselves. the first group was alpha, second beta, ect. until the end of the alphabet then after you ran out of letters you would use two suck as alpha beta and alpha gamma. Its kinda confusing. Most of the sororities use it just as an identification. Just like your first name. ITs a way for them to recognize each other. I am an Omega Phi Alpha,a service sorority. We do service projects and community help, not like a social sorority which is what you friend joined I believe.

Actually, a lot of greek fraternities and sororities derive their greek letters from the first letters a greek phrase..which only the members know. And yes, the letters Gamma Phi Beta does stand for something.

Gamma Phi Beta does stand for something, but only initiated members know the meaning. Sororities are initially popular because of the Hollywood view of parties and things like that, but they also do a lot more. They have philanthropic events to raise funds for the different charities they promote, its good for networking outside of college, they try to better their relations outside the Greek community, and of course there are the social events.
So, although she says she joined a social sorority, Gamma Phi Beta has other benefits outside of the social aspects.

Hope that helps :]
