I need to find an agency or organization that can help me pay rent or my 3 children will be homeless in 2 weeks.

Our landlord is going to start eviction proceedings on friday if we don’t have at least 1 month. I just changed jobs and I don’t know what to do. We will be homeless in less than 2 weeks if I don’t find help. Family can’t. Already asked. We live in the Albany, NY area.

Ask your employer if he will give you an advance until you can get on your feet.

Meanwhile, pay whatever you can afford towards the rent and approach your landlord to see what he can come up with in the way of a week-by-week payment plan.

Try to make yourself valuable tenants. Offset some of your landlord’s costs by offering to do some maintenance, gardening… whatever is of value to him.

Meanwhile, get together every cent you can. Sell stuff you don’t need, cut down on non-essentials, save energy costs, walk to work, .. anything to keep that roof over your head.

Take a second job if you have to.. even if its a paper round.

Get in touch with your local church group or your local housing office and see what they can do for you. A trip to you library may be a good plan. They may be able to put you in touch with a local advisor.

Know your rights. Check your tenancy contract thoroughly and get someone to look it over to make sure its a “fair and viable” agreement. If you haven’t defaulted before and have been given no warning, something is not right. Your landlord has to have serious grounds to begin eviction proceedings.

Paying what you can will help to forestall those proceedings.

I cannot believe that your landlord would be so heartless. Talk to your local social security office and explain your problem.

Can you look into emergency cash assistance at the dept of Human services for this?
