Etsy.com is fairly new, but growing like wildfire. It’s an online marketplace for handmade things of all kinds. When you create an account there, you get an online store — at no cost to you! Then you can list your goodies, post photos, and sell via PayPal to interested buyers. (Etsy collects a small fee for each listing, and a tiny commission on each item you sell. But these fees are lower than eBay’s fees.)
The coolest thing about Etsy is, it’s so much fun to browse. You can use their Browse by Color feature, which fills your screen with beautiful colored bubbles. Click on one, and you’ll pull up a series of handmade things in that color. Or, you can browse by Time Machine, which looks like an endless spiral of pictures, going back in time. They’re arranged by the time they were listed on the site. Click on any one, and you can see its listing. Believe me, this is the greatest tool for procrastinating, ever.
You’ll also find solid function operating behind all this great design. Etsy has a feedback system for sellers, so you can buy from people you trust. There’s also a great community forum for sellers to share information with each other. Creating an account and store could not be easier. All you need is a valid credit card.
