WTF is the point of ‘backing up’ your computers files if you cant understand them once your computer completely ***** up and you actually need it?

Well if you backed them up on disc. Then when your computer has a bad day. You can get it put right. That usualy means you losing all of your personal data.
You then use those disc/s to add hem back to your computer.

well I did back them up onto a disk

and yeasterday my laptop wouldnt even start so I called dell and they told me my hard drive has gone back, so they sent me a new one today, and I put it in my computer is working (im on it now) its just like new with out anything I installed on it..and some of that stuff I needed for school, like programs. and I cant seem to find them in my back up disk and yes they were on my computer while I backed it up…. :(

Thern try it out on another computer, a friends, one at school, one in a library. If the disc is messed up, it is the disc that is corrupt. If it comes out alright on another computer, the disc player is at fault.

I think we are talking about two different things here. The back up discs that the computer asks you to save, only give you the operating files to make the computer to work. You need to save personal stuff yourself.

Then they are still there somewhere, or part of the disk is corrupt. When you insert the disc and the computer has read it, it should come up with a list of all of the files on that disc.
If the files you are looking for are not there, for one reason or another. Then it’s like I say above or they are not on the disc.

I truly am sorry, I have in the past lost important work, because the disc has become corrupt. I know the frustration it gives.
