I think you should tell him yourself. Telling by friends or letters always causes trouble. One time, one of my friends came up with an idea to tell a boy she liked that she liked him. And because she didn’t want to be humiliated if he said no, she kinda went long way around, telling almost every person that she was not that close with to deliver the message to him and at the end, it was like, “Lauren’s friend Christine told Jenna and she went to Jessica and she told Mike and he told me that Katie likes you. Do you like her?” Oh, it was sick. He took her all wrong and she didn’t have a go with him.
