Such a beautiful poem. I love it.

I don’t think we have two dates for it. Here, Rememberance Day is just on the 9th.

It is a very moving poem. It is so important to remember, or we disrespect the men who died fighting.

I remember it every year. :) 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. And yes, we do, I have a moment of silence even now that I’m not at school.

Yes, I always stop, wherever I am, whatever I am doing. And even if I am alone in the house. I respectfully stand up and do the silence. I pay my respects as the dead demand.

Well, I’m always alone in the house. Unless of course it’s payday, but then I still remember it. Someone became annoyed at me a few years ago. I was doing my grocery shopping and stopped in the middle of the aisle. Lol.

That’s a shame. It is a very important day here. Ceremonies galore. Very solemn and dignified. The old soldiers (what there are now) march and pay respects.

Some info to help, especially the Americans who might not remember the same as we do in the Uk.

Veterans Day is commemorated in the United States on 11 November, and is both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states. However, the function of the observance elsewhere is more closely matched by Memorial Day in May. In the United States, and some other allied nations, 11 November was formerly known as Armistice Day; in the United States it was given its new name after the end of World War II. Most schools, particularly more middle and high schools than some elementary schools, throughout the U.S. usually hold assemblies on a school day prior, with various presentations recognizing teachers and staff members who served in one of the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, as well as remembering the U.S. troops who died in past and present wars, and some patriotic music by a school choir, band and/or orchestra, including songs from a musical used as a tribute to the troops.

When I lived in Puerto Rico, I lived in a house walking distance from the US Military cemetery. This cemetery was very large and well kept, very beautiful and peaceful. I would wake up at 5am to go walking for exercising along with many other people and walk the cemetary grounds. During these walks I was praying for all the people buried there. It was a great place for meditation and prayer. This poem reminds me of my early morning walks.
Beautiful poem!

Thanks for the post Anubis.

On a school trip (a few years ago….many years ago…actually) we visited the Normandy beaches and then later that day, the military cemetery. I remember looking at the lines upon lines of identical grave stones for all those who fought and at that point realised what it meant to lay your life on the line for many people.

In here elementary schools also have assemblies. In many, real veterans are invited too. I remember when my daughter was in Grade 3, she interviewed one veteran and it was published in her school’s newspaper. I still remember her class had to memorize Shel Silverstein’s poem “Hug O’War” and perform it during one of their assemblies:
“I will not play at tug o’ war
I’d rather play at hug o’ war,
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses
And everyone grins
And everyone cuddles
And everyone wins.”

I have been to those memorial cementeries in Belgium and France, several times. I also brought my children there. There are some fullsized scenes from the Great War built up, showing the horrors. I have seen the change in their young minds alter from “cool” to a deep afterthought (which was my purpose).

So many lives were sacrificed, on both sides, for some rulers’ ambitions. Soldier who were not much more than kids were slaughtered en masse, while being told in their respective country churches that “God is on your side” (Listen to the old Joan Baez song with the same title).

Thanks for this post Anubis.

Sometimes I think people get so polarized by politicinas that they imagine that all patriots are warmongers, or that all who oppose war in general are unpatriotic or ignorant of the price of freedom. We can both honor those who give their lives for country and liberty, and work for the day when no man takes up arms against another.

Lest We Forget

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Tomorrow, Sunday 9th is Rememberance Sunday and Tuesday 11th is Armistice Day.
Wear Your poppy with pride

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

In memorium.
