job help: I’m extremely shy. - Help.com

I’m extremely shy.

I started a new job that is supposed to have me calling strangers. I’ve been ducking out on my responsibilities for over a month now. How can I force myself to speak to strangers? I stutter really bad and I get sweaty and nervous every time I have to speak to a stranger. How do I get over the terror of the phone calls? I want to keep this job.

Sounds like a perfect job for you to be able to build you self confidence. The more you do it the easier it will get. Stop thinking or anylizing what you are doing it just makes things worse. You should have some sort of script, if you don’t, make one. follow it and listen to them and just repond. It is a lot easier to do it on the phone than in person. but relax, it’s just a person, they can’t hurt you. The worst that will happen is that they will hang up on you. so what. try someone else.

Does your workplace have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)? These programs are meant to help employees deal with problems that they are encountering… and they’re completely confidential… so your boss would not be told. Check with your Human Resources department or something of the like…

They do have a script. The problem is I never get to the script. I start breathing fast and my heart beats fast before I even pick up the phone. I bumbled my words in the practices with the scripts. I’m terrified. Relax is all everyone tells me. If I knew how then I wouldn’t post this.

what are you afraid of that makes you get like that? It sounds like anxiety, do you have these issues in other situation? if so, talk to your doctor, it may be a chemical imbalance. Alot of people have the same problem, I had to over come the same thing.
