life help: I need a career. - Help.com

I need a career.

I have a BS in finance but hate desk jobs. I wouldn’t mind going back to school but I don’t want to waste money for something else I don’t want to do. I am now considering the Army. Is there anything else I should consider, career-wise, before signing my life away.

Be a Mod here, but you said you don’t like desk jobs.
That’s alright. I hear the pay really sucks.

hate desk jobs
wouldn’t mind going back to school
don’t want to waste money
for something else I don’t want to do
considering the Army
anything else I should consider
signing my life away

This all sounds pretty negative and passive. Is there anything you actually LIKE to do?

Yes, what you consider is what it is you love to do.

Right, that’s the point. So who ARE you? What do you love to do? Play music? Chase butterflies? Write books? Punch a punching bag? Swim? Research obscure facts? Play with kids? Add columns of numbers? Invent games? Fiddle with your computer? Collect antique guns?

There IS a job doing what you love to do—probably even a LEGAL one.

Want some examples?

Me? I spent my childhood writing in my diary and reading books. Became a writer.
My son always loved to investigate history and to run fast. Became a history teacher and a track coach.
Next-door neighbor loved to draw pictures. She’s an artist and museum educator.
Nephew thrived on being the neighborhood bully and telling people what to do. He’s a prison guard.
Best friend’s big sister was addicted to hearing about other people’s problems. She became a social worker.
My younger son loved to swim. He’s a lifeguard, swim coach, divemaster, and sometimes camp director.
Niece was drawn to animals, the furry kind. She works as a vet-tech.
‘Nother niece was always caring and nurturing. Just graduated from massage school.
Cousin loved to bargain hunt. She now does it full time and sells her finds on eBay.
Son’s childhood buddy was an argumentative little brat who loved money. Lawyer on Wall Street.
Neighbor Nancy liked to dress up and play parts. She’s now an actress.
‘Nother argumentative and tenacious young friend became a patient advocate in a hospital.
Her sister has a flair for decorating. She stages houses to prepare them for sale.
Neighbor’s daughter wanted to work on her own and be outdoors. She gave up engineering to be a mail carrier.
A talented actress friend didn’t want to do to LA or NYC. She uses her talents as a local radio personality.
And a burned-out actor friend started a business giving NYC neighborhood tours in historical costume and character.
My I-just-want-to-be-a-mom niece has a day-care business in her home.
My I-just-want-to-play-hockey friend manages a rink at a private school and skates whenever he wants.
My I-only-care-about-baseball friend grew up to be a major-league scout.

WHATEVER–there is a way to put your passion to work. And if you don’t think you have a passion, think again. Hell, there are people who get paid to sample wines, buy and sell baseball cards, watch TV shows, shop, whatever. For awhile I worked as a restaurant reviewer. How sweet is that?
