sleep help: How can I get better sleep? - Help.com

How can I get better sleep?

No matter how hard I try or how early I go to bed, I can almost never sleep more than 3 hours. At best I’ll get 5 hours. I’ve tried everything: taking a hot bath, turning all electronics off an hour before going to bed, reading, meditating, praying, EVERYTHING. I don’t want to take sleeping pills or any medication, and I don’t think I’m old enough anyway (I’m a teenager). Please, what can I do to get better sleep? I don’t want to stay an insomniac!

Severe exhaustion?

Try doing something very exerting a few hours before you go to bed.

Perhaps you need some sleep pills.

Hm. Maybe just make a point to stay up for as long as you can, then you’ll fall asleep, sleep for a long time.

I see. Sleep is important. How about seeing a doctor or clinical psychologist?
They usually have other resources than pills.

Are you anxious about anything? Stress could mess with your sleeping patterns.
A couple tips I use:
-Don’t look at the clock
-Don’t stress yourself out thinking about how tired you are going to be the next day

Mmm… I do have a tendency to stress out a lot, but not around bedtime. That’s when I dream… Well, actually, I dream all the time, but that’s not the point. I just don’t know what’s wrong… Other strange things have been happening to my body, too, but I’m too embarrassed to talk about it on here. I can’t go to the doctor for another month (appointments are hard to get).

Hmmm, other strange things. Well, hope you can find out people you can trust to consult the personal matter. I pray for you.

If you are stressed out during the daytime, it can and probably will effect your sleeping patterns. Stress can also cause all kinds of wierd things to happen with your body. Among the most common effects of high stress in women are problems with your period, sleep and stomach. Your hormones are probably going crazy trying to cope with everything in your life. I would recommend seeing a doctor as soon as you can to get medication to straighten things out before the problems start impacting your life too severely. I know when I get stressed out about things, it tends to spiral out of control with physical symptoms. Lexapro works great and has fewer side effects than other anti-anxiety meds. I started taking it when I was 16. Another great medication your doctor can give you (if the “too embarrassing” problem relates to what some might term your monthly “prize”) is birth control pills like Ortho-Tricylclin lo.

definitely don’t lay in bed at least an hour before you actually lie to sleep. you will get restless in your bed if your just hanging out there or reading… but at least an hour before, avoid your bed. i wouldn’t necessarily try to exert yourself a few hours before you go to sleep b/c you will get the blood pumping and it will keep you more awake if anything. you could try changing your surroundings. rearrange your room, paint it, make it into a place that you KNOW you can fall alseep in. do you have an easier time sleeping somewhere else? if so, mimick that place in your bedroom.

I use this http://www.spiralfrog.com/download/al… when I can’t sleep, and if you can’t use spiralfrog, maybe you could find something like that on ebay or amazon.
