What do you do to save money?
I’m moving out of my parents’ house soon (for the 3rd time) and am going to be looking for ways to save money….
I’ve read some really good articles that have tips like planning meals a week in advance, combining shopping trips so you don’t have to drive as much, unplugging electronics when not in use…
what types of things have become part of your daily routine that help you save money?

Wait to buy new the clothes until the clothes you’re wearing can’t be classified as clothing anymore.
turn off lights when youre not using them, and try get a place that doesnt use electric heating, that will chew through money like no ones business. i.e put on more clothes instead of turning the heat on.
try biking, walking or busing places rather than driving.
and buy things in bulk, its expensive at the beginning but way cheaper int he long run.
Budget. It can be tedious but once you get yourself properly programmed you won’t need to continually keep records to save.
Put a certain amount every month into some kind of savings. For example, if you get $2000 a month, put 200 or whatever you decide into savings. Learn to live on what’s left and soon you won’t miss it. But at the end of the year, you have $2400 for emergencies or future use! It’s almost like getting paid an extra month, because you learned to live on a little less.
Learn to discern between wants and needs. Do you really need a TV? Or could you go find a sad friend to visit and cheer up to fill your time?! Do you really need new clothes to fit the fad or what you have will do for a while? Do you really need to eat out or could you go home and make yourself a sandwich? Just some suggestions.
Wait to buy stuff until you can pay cash for it. I’ve listened to John Commuta too much. I hate the credit industry and all the interest involved. With credit cards you can end up paying six times the original price! Waiting a little to save up the cash can save you piles!
Any way, every one above is stealing my ideas while I’m typing all this! :(
Hope this helps some! :)

Very sad. I read somewhere that people have stopped making expensive purchases yet still continue to make small purchases multiple times that adds up.
I love spending money at like Victoria’s Secret but I know it’s not necessary and could probably be cut out of my budget.
Hello Target bras…good bye Body by Victoria :(

I certainly like that! I have so many unworn clothes I really should either start wearing or donate! Often I buy more clothes instead of shopping in my own closet!

I do that a lot. I am starting to make lists/menus so I am prepared. And I eat before I go. Often now I am so full looking at food makes me sick! Its good for saving money!

Yeah, that one is bad, you want to buy everything!
If you work, make packed lunches instead of buying from shops, you save loads doing that. Also, make a huge batch of soup from cheap ingredients like vegetables and freeze most of it so you can eat it instead of ready meals.
Also, yeah, budget. Boring but essential. Only take out the cash that you budget for food and socialising, and when you have no cash, that’s it.
I also put all my spare change into a big glass bottle. At the end of each month I count it all up and I put it towards my credit card repayments and it’s clearing it a lot quicker than not doing it. It stops you from spending the spare change on sweets, especially expensive vending machines as most only take coins.

You’re so right! Last year I bought a huge box of tampons and I haven’t had to go to the store once to buy them! Sorry but it’s true!
If I want a new top of something, I eBay another item of clothing I don’t wear anymore in order to buy the item. It means you’ll always be using your clothes and you won’t have items sitting in there that still have the tags on.

I’ve heard clipping coupons often gets you to buy things you don’t need. The thrill of saving money is good…if you actually like the product you’re buying!

Have you ever sold a “digital book” online?
Yeah, my partner’s Mum has a business card so she can shop in Costco. I got her to buy me washing powder. It’s a huge box that doesn’t fit in anywhere but I haven’t had to buy any since the start of the year.

That’s a great idea! I used to make earrings online and sell them on ebay. I’ve never sold clothing though…

Haha that’s all really good advice! I love lavish things…but I’ve always tried to be good about it.
A couple years ago I bought a flat screen tv. I shopped around while I was saving money and paid half cash and put the rest on a store card. I paid of the card before i even started paying interest! I wish I were the wise with every purchase I made!

I only clip coupons for stuff that I actually use. I throw the other ones away, or give them to someone who will use them.

Haha that’s good. Do you get coupons from newspapers or do you go online? I try finding them online but am often disappointed
Don’t go to town! lol
I live 50 minutes from town (includes a 20 minute ferry ride) so I hardly ever go (maybe once a month). Excellent way to keep from spending money! When I do go, just buying the necessities seems like spending so much I can’t bring myself to spend more!

Haha interesting…I have a little different geographical location-situation. I live in a “small town” and work like 25 miles from home. I commute and when I need to shop, I do it on the ride home. Plus gas is much cheaper near work so I try and fill up then, too!
Do you live in the US Dave #1??
No. I live in the “Wide open spaces” (Dixie Chicks, not that I really liked them, just the song) of the sparsely inhabitted north (Canada).

Yeah, you’ll be surprised what people will buy. I’ve even sold used make up on eBay. My friend was going to through out some old shoes, but they were from the early 90s and sold for £38! Never through anything out.

Do not used credit cards. Under now circumstances should you ever pay interest to anyone. Save for what you want to purchase, then pay cash for it.

I had text in the one I sent though! lol
Thaaat’s weird…maybe they didn’t like what you said, cowboy ;)
Could be, cowgirl. Just don’t let ‘em buck you off!
I actually worked as a cowboy for 4 years. It was fun and I would like to do more of it if I could make a better living at it!
Or, maybe I broke help.com when I said to pay cash for everything. lol

True. Totally out of style.
I usually just work some extra overtime and stop eating out. That’s how I save up some money.
Thanks! Overtime is good! And dining out can be expensive!
the joys of real life eh lol.
use christmas lights instead of the regular ceiling lights.
they use a lot less energy.
