i have the attention span of a 5 year old.

hi,

im just wondering is there a way to keep concentrated on something, like a conversation thats really boring. this probably does make much sense but you’ll read it anyway lol. whenever i get even slightly distracted or bored, i loose focus or concentration on what is going on around me. and i will start day dreaming about something stupid, like i wonder if i got steak for dinner. or something funny like family guy. i just want to know if anyone has any tips for keeping concentrated. haha sounds like constipated lol.

It could actually be a medical condition like A.D.D. or something. You could always go the doctor route and get some meds to help you.

Well, how old are you? It could be that your age is a possible factor.

Daydreaming is ok. When not paying attention starts to effect your performance in life than it would be a problem

oh, well the other week my mate phoned me, and as i was talking to him, i found this balloon saying happy birthday on it and started kicking it about. after about 5 minutes, all my attention was on this balloon. and i ended up not paying any attention to what he was saying lol.

you may need to see a doc, if you loose complete focus over a balloon at 19. Yes you may have a problem

i have to say that being english on this is just amazing. because the wording of some of you people (no disrespect) is amazingly funny, when read the first time.

“if you loose complete focus over a balloon at 19. Yes you may have a problem”

anyway,,,its not that i cant concentrate, because i work as a painter and decorator. im just wondering with if these balloon situations are a problem?

doublegin19, sometimes it just takes willpower. i’ve always had ADD but my parents decided that it was best to just teach me self control. it took a really long time, but now i am successful in academics, work, and a social life, and i am able to keep my imagination in check. my attention span is very short, but i do have the willpower and the determination to sit down and focus now if i need to get a job done.

there’s no problem with being distracted in your free time and enjoying the simple aspects of life (like a balloon), but if this is restricting your social life, your education, or your career, then you need to see what you can do to fix this. if you find that no matter how hard you try you still cannot concetrate, then i suggest that you make an appointment with a pschiatrist who can prescribe the appropriate medicine that can help you focus throughout the day.

I zone out in my class periodically but my professor has ADD too (or so she tells us!) so it is cool. I have actually seen her seem to take a deep breath, think about where she is going with a thought, and if she forgets, she just backs up a minute and usually picks up the thread. I find my daydreams to be helpful sometimes when I am stressed out. If I can think of something completely different, it helps me to calm down. Sometimes my friends wander off the path too, when they are telling me about their latest great adventure or crisis, and if I start asking questions, it helps me to focus on what they are saying (especially on the phone)and it helps them to think about what they are saying and what I’m hearing too. Good luck though, I’m finding myself more interested in snow flurries outside today than my boss’ latest big scheme to expedite our workload!

nice lol. thanks for the advice, i will try to concentrate a little harder.

just quickly how do you manage to pay attention to someone when talking face to face, without day dreaming or being rude and telling them to jog on.

if in the moment your completely bored, for whatever reason it may be.
