I drive a truck for a living and need to find another job, because I’m gone a month at a time or longer.

I make good money but I’m getting married in February and am going to start a family. I know the economy is bad and it isnt a good time to job hunt but need something local, any suggestions?

If you live in the United States you can go to the local unemployment office and they will help you figure out what you can do. Every state in the US has them. They also have career testing to see what your attributes are. Good Luck.

Have you considered joining a union, Electrician, Plumbing, Steam/Pipe fitters, Steel workers.

The mechanical company I work for is Union only, and Union offers great benefits and support to families. Although you’d have to take a cutback to start most likely, you would make yourself more marketable in the future and be making long term plans (retirement, health care etc) for the future.

If the unemployment office can not help (which I doubt) contact your local state department offices. Most states are offering retraining programs at no cost because of the big-3 crises and all the other lay-offs.

The biggest and still growing industry right now is Medical. There are other jobs besides doctor, nurse, etc. There is maintenance, computer repairs, and business adminstration.

Again good luck!

See if you have a local union. I don’t know what the rates are like out there. A union will train you and tell you about pay scales that they have. It’s a 4 year program and you make a percentage of what a Full, Master Plumber makes.

Here, in Maryland we have a great program. Granted the cost of living is high, and so maybe it wouldn’t be as good out there.
