job help: I don’t know what to do. - Help.com

I don’t know what to do.

I used some really bad judgement and I’m really afraid that I will lose my job. I went on a bender over the weekend and this is all a result of it. I am so scared, if I lose my job I don’t know what I will do. I am barely making it as it is. There is no sign of things getting better. I have a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach.

show up for work anyway. If your boss talks to you about it, tell him that you know you screwed up, and it won’t happen again. No excuses, no defenses, no “I only….”

Just “Yes, Sir, I screwed up. It will NEVER happen again.”

He may fire you anyway, but you will still be able to walk out with your head up. Then, when you find a new job, remember what you’ve learned.

The damage done will be a lot less if you take responsibility for your actions. You went on a bender and did some things you feel endangered your job. It happened. It can’t be helped. What your boss wants to hear from you after all of this is an apology to everyone you implicated in this and a vow not to do it again. It would also help to do a little extra work around the office as a way of saying sorry.

Above all, deal with the situation before it becomes more of a situation. The consequences may be dire, but those will be minor compared to what will happen if you wait around and pray that people forget about your mistake.
