To anyone with knowledge of Buddhism, especially in

Thailand If a Thai girl who is moderately buddhist promises something on ‘’her buddha'’ and would promise something on my own life also, should I believe her? The chances are, it looks like she is a big lier and may be working the ‘foriegn man’ industry like many of them do there, but I want to know if a ‘’promise on buddha'’ holds much value in Thailand to a moderate (not intense) believer who visits the temples now and again

Good question, maybe try beliefnet.com for some answers

I’d say a big no on that one. I’ve found that people who take their faith seriously don’t swear on it to pick up.

But it depends on the person. Asking about the country in general seems stereotypical, but Thia’s Buddhism seems to be less part of their daily life than their Laos Buddhist neighbours.

If you gave the detail, it would be more interesting. I almost got played myself a few weeks ago by a lady who “had her motorbike stolen”. Sounds kitch, but she was so sweet and genuinely ( and beautiful ) I almost bought her a new one until I had a reality check and was like “what the heck are you doing man” LOL

There’s no such thing!!! Do not believe her!!! I’m not a Buddhist but I know that my friends who are a Buddhist don’t do that!!! Make a research on Buddhism.

You are so true!! There’s nothing like that. Buddhism is not about that.

hmmm. I see. well recent developments show me that I should not trust her at all…..It looks like she might be going with men to fund her nights out, and then getting back to talk to me!!! not very good at all. Time to leave well alone and stop hurting myself I think

Yeah. if you have that doubt, I think you can let her go. You’re far away from her so it’s easy to get over it. I would love to hear more about it if you want to share. I’ve given you my email address on shout.

I’m so sorry that your life is like that!! :D

Thanks Padle. yeah, I think I have to let go. Your Email gets automatically removed when you type it so that others cannot see (this site is pretty cool and does not let information go out like that).
But I have added you for emails now, so you will find an msn link on my profile page under my picture! :) yeah, it would be good to talk about it! If I told you about this girl, you would probably be asking me why I did not run away as fast as I could a little while ago! I am sort of asking this same question….lol

Chemistry. Don’t feel bad man, you were worked by a pro. Notch it up to a good story and have a laugh, and remember those sweet moments you really thought a godess had just happened to for in love with you for no reason.

If your in Thailand, get out and about! There are sooooo many better things ( and people ) to be doing right now.

As far as I know, buddhists don’t swear on their buddha the way christians swear to god. I doubt they require a similar oath in court even. The reason has to do with the nature of buddhism. The buddha did not claim to be a god or have any supernatural powers. He does not judge people. Buddhism is about coming to terms with the nature of the universe and achieving an ethical state of being. Its almost as though she was making fun of your lack of knowledge about the subject when she said that.
