The Scarlet Letter

For anyone who’s willing, I need help writing an essay on The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne.

My essay topic is this: “How does Chapter 1 set up the themes and symbols of the entire novel?”

I need to write a 5 page essay on this. Here’s what I’ve got on the top of my head

Weed around prison door- Describes the puritan society of that time

Prison door- ??? I honestly have no idea what the purpose of the door was.

Rose- The standing beauty in a pile of crap. Much like how the letter “A” will represent later on in the novel. It’s also notable that they are both the same color which also represents beauty.

All I need is some more detailed information on this that I can expand up to 5 pages on.

The prison door describes the puritan society perfectly. Don’t you know what the Puritans believed?

Well I never studied American Literature. We study rhetoric.

I know it’s stupid, but we won’t delve into those puritan stuff until like January or February.

And Warren, I just need some outside info. I’m not asking for much. At least I think I’m not….

Major portions of my essay will be based around what I think. I just need some other ideas to support it.

Puritans are worth a few minutes on Wikipedia. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry.

lol @ Xeno Dragon. I was always brutal at English/writing. Guess that’s why I earned my degree in engineering? Numbers just make more sense to me, haha.

I would plan 4 pages of analysis. Pick 4 major topics for 4 paragraphs, and then 2 more paragraphs for intro and closing. That should give you 4.5 to 5 pages. After you pick those four topics, use wikipedia or another source to look some stuff up and find more meat to add to your analysis.

Again, this is just basic advice. I re-iterate, I was brutal in English =)
