I don’t know what I want to go to school for.
I graduated high school and I’ve been out of school for 6 months now. It’s terribly boring. I’m able to get my license in January and that’s when I wanted to go to a school, after I can drive there myself. But I’ve researched before and thought about everything but I still can’t think of something I want to go to school for. Personally I’d like to go to a school where I just learn about the career I want to pursue and any other topic I’d need to learn for it, instead of having to go to a college and having to learn math and english and all of that again. If I have to then I will.
But I basically just need help figuring out what I want to go to school for. Preferrably I’d like to know by next summer. I don’t really have any hobbies.. and the things that I’m interested in can’t be a career.
Anyone?

Don’t go to college to study something you’re interested in. Go to college to get a piece of paper that says you’re worth a lot of money. Besides, you can learn about things you’re interested in a lot faster on your own.
This is a very tough question now-a-days. The reason it’s tough is because there are so many employers that ask for a college degree (a BA or BS), but when push comes to shove all they REALLY want is experience. The big trouble is there are so many out of work, employers are asking for and getting 100% of what they are looking for (both a degree AND experience). So a trade school to start out might not be a bad idea… then continue on a BA/S degree part-time while you work. Higher level degrees right now are even more controversial (unless you want to be a doctor or such). So… I’d take the Jung personality test… see where you stand there, and see what it recommends for a career based on your personality (if you are sorta clueless about that). Keep in mind that this test can and most likely WILL have different results as you get older.

Girl, don’t underestimate the power of a solid education. A four year degree is designed to help you figure out what you want to study - that’s why they have a core curriculum which includes english and math and all that other junk. It’s SO worth the effort. You get to take classes in psychology, anthropology, political science, business, fashion design, web design - all sorts of things that will help you figure out what works for you and what doesn’t. And NONE of it will hurt you. Anything you can do to increase your knowledge of the world is great for you and will help you in whatever career you finally choose to pursue.
Here’s another thing.. most people don’t actually do what they studied to do. It’s the simple act of getting you a degree, no matter WHAT it’s in, that prepares you to tackle any job. Don’t postpone it; Just go for it. It’s okay! You’ll figure it out, as most of us do, on the way. Don’t let indecision prevent you from one of the greatest experiences in life - learning what you’re passionate about!
Im at university, and i can tell you over 90% of the people here have no idea what they want to do with their lives, but having that core education under your belt does nothing but open doors for you. most university degrees wont get you a job anyhow, you would need to go to graduate school.
Thanks so.. I think these replies motivated me more to go to some kind of school.
i mean….nobody here is going to be able to tell you what to do with your life, only you can figure that out. but also, you can change your major at university at any time. I’m in my third year and I’m changing next semester. going to school is a lot of fun too! you will meet a ton of people
Right.. and yeah I think I’d enjoy going. Actually I really think I need to go so I can do something with my life. And when you go is it true you make your own schedule or is there a certain schedule ?
with college you can take your basics for your degree 1st in turn will give you more time to find something that you are interested in. also if you talk to one of the career advisors then they can set you up with some tests that would help you find a career that you will be interested in
well it all depends. for me, im an arts student, so i can basically take whatever i want. someone who goes for engineering on the other hand will have very specific courses he/she will need to take. but yes, you do pick your own classes and make your own schedule. next semester i only have class on tuesday and thursday! yes!
That’s sweet.. I almost went to an art school for photography but then decided not to because I don’t think I’d want to have photography be my career. Now that I think of it I could of just taken it for fun but.. ehh oh well
by arts i meant like…general arts, im not an artist haha. but ya…if you like photography why not? what are your hobbies or interests? im sure you can think of something to at least start in.
Oh haha. Well I don’t think I have many hobbies because I don’t really do anything unfortuneately.. but my interests are family, friends, music, drawing, taking pictures, writing poetry.. I guess I’m artistic you could say, but it’s not like I do those things all of the time. I enjoy them though.
haha you dont do anything? just vegitate on a couch all day? perhaps then just try things out. turn of the computer an television and pursue music and drawing and photography some more. immerse yourself in hobbies and try/read about new things. you will find your way.
Nah I don’t even really watch tv. My routine goes waking up, showering, cleaning the house, I check my mail online, I eat if I’m hungry, and my family comes home so sometimes I hang around them if I’m not in my room listening to music or something.
And going to school to learn more about art or music would be fun but.. I don’t think I’d want an art career. Not saying I can’t take art classes anyway, I’d just like to go through the basic classes and figure out what I want to do from there I guess. It’s hard for me to find a hobby =/
maybe just a general arts thing is for you then. at my school (im pretty sure at most) you can do a studio art/art history major, perhaps that is something you would be insterested in. check out the websites of some local schools and see what they have to offer.
Even if you’re not sure *after* you graduate what you want to be exactly, you’ll have some skills such as how to research something and write about it so other people understand, how to understand the basics of finance and economies. If you learn history you could put current events or issues into a historical context that people will like and admire. The college organizations also help you practice leadership, socializing, teamwork. And the different school activities could teach you dancing, theater, movie appreciation, art appreciation or art history. Etc… College is a good place to grow so when you know what you want to do, you’ll have the knowlege and skills to convince people you’re the right person for the thing you want to do. Also you may gain some lifelong friends.

Yeah maybe I would be interested in that. But I don’t know.. what do the people in your college take that don’t know what they want to do as a career? Just basics like math, english, science, etc.?

Oh yeah.. thanks
you name it. people taking bio-medical sciences, economics, marketing (this is a big one!), or any arts student. some will tell you they want to teach or whatever but most have no idea.
Hmmm.. well I’m understanding it all more now.. so I guess whenever I look up schools again I’ll see what it’s all about. I might just end up taking basic classes.. or any class that I’m interested in. Plus I’m sure the administrators could help..
My younger brother is at his last year in high school. He’s not so fund of school. He tried to overcome this problem that he believes coming from his rutine of life. He came to live with me in another city in hope to change his attitude by changing the surroundings.
The bottom line is that you need to change your rutine life and try to make going to school more fun.
xCassi what do you like to do? My dad said anyone can do anything but the things God made you NOT to do.
PS:do you know the Lord
my dad caught me on here and yelled so bye forever!
Read the book named - Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch. Even all his books. You might get a new avenue of your life.
‘Conversations with God for Teens’ also could be very effective for you.
