close programs that you dont need that are running in your back ground.

All those programs that are running in your task bar.

Even brand new, powerful computers feel slow sometimes, but there are probably ways to speed up your computer at least a little bit. How much depends on the type of computer and what it is you want to be faster. Internet access is especially tough, because it depends on your internet service provider and also the speed of the websites you are visiting.

Before doing anything more advanced, I always advise people to start by uninstalling any software they don’t use. This can speed up the computer in several ways, and it also makes the rest of the tuning process simpler.

Do what I did with mine. I unplugged it and threw it in the trash, saved patiently for another one, waited 2 years to buy another one and the new one runs like a charm!

One good thing you should do is delete temporary files, sometimes there are thousands of them and the computer becomes real slow.
If it’s Windows XP what you’re using, close all programs and go to My Computer > Documents and Settings > User > Local > Settings > Temp and then delete every file in there. The system won’t allow you to delete some but delete all others.
In IE go to Tools > Internet Options and then delete Temporary Internet Files

Try and do a ‘disk cleanup’

All programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk cleanup

Defragging is good, but it is not likely to help with web browsing.

How technically proficient are you? Would you be comfortable installing a different browser? Google’s new browser (called Chrome) is less full-featured than Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Opera, but it is the fastest browsing experience you are likely to get — it really is noticably faster on most sites, including web mail sites like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail. This won’t help general computer slowness, but if you are just interested in web speed it might fit the bill.
