Why is Thanksgiving such a Big Deal in the United States?

Is it because that’s the only day Americans have set aside to give thanks?

In case you haven’t heard: There’s somewhat of a catastrophe going on in Mumbai (India) — how can people NOT CARE about what is going on in the world … simply because it’s a holiday?

Online media needs to be reformed — it needs to reflect what is ACTUALLY happening in the world!

Most stories of Thanksgiving history start with the harvest celebration of the pilgrims and the indians that took place in the autumn of 1621. Although they did have a three-day feast in celebration of a good harvest, and the local indians did participate, this “first Thanksgiving” was not a holiday, simply a gathering. There is little evidence that this feast of thanks led directly to our modern Thanksgiving Day holiday. Thanksgiving can, however, be traced back to 1863 when Pres. Lincoln became the first president to proclaim Thanksgiving Day. The holiday has been a fixture of late November ever since.

People do care every day about what’s going on in the world. but mate, sometimes you have to sit back and look at the positive things too. sometimes you gotta sit with your family and look at what you do have and be thankful for it. we set a day aside specifically for that yes, but i know many people who are caring and helping others every single day of their life.

Lots of Americans care about what is going on in the world but we cannot stop our holidays and our special occasions everytime some sort of disaster strikes the world….otherwise we would NEVER celebrate everything. Listen I understand the concept of America to the rescue! but the truth is that the world didnt exactly stop celebrating when 9/11 happened and Katrina struck…so sorry

I’m going to take that this poster is from India, am I right?

No, I’m not — I normally say where I am from doesn’t matter all that much. On the other hand, I guess it would be most precise to say that I’m from my mother and my father. ;D

Forigve me then
I ment this question in so I could exsplain to you, if you’d from, india that things are being done and that although I am not sure, I am sure American soljiers are helping out in both India and in our New York City, giving up their thanksgiving. Forgive me once more for that question was somthing I should not have asked for it was none of my buissness

Can I point out here that Canadian soldiers are also being held hostage in Mumbai, and it isn’t even our war?
