Should I play it safe or live my dreams?
I’m at a point in my life where I really need some advice. Should I play it safe and get an education, by going to college. Get a degree and get a decent job, but never taking the risk to go after my dreams and regret it badly when I’m old?………….OR……Should I take a risk and forget college to fulfill my dreams of being a rock star?! But if I fail, I end up homeless and die poor. So live a normal boring life by playing it safe, or take the risk to live my dreams?!!!!!!
…..PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Can you try to do both? Study and go to college while trying to be a rock star?

That sounds extremely difficult! Its going to be hard enough trying to be a rock star! Now I have to worry about passing my classes and studying?!

How much longer do you have to go in college? And how old are you?
Um I’m 19 and I’m suppose to start college in the spring. But I’m really thinking about dropping it to pursue my dreams! This is my problem I can’t make up my mind, I’m getting old too!!!
19! You’re thinking you’re getting old? Your life is just beginning! Why not play at local rock clubs on the weekends while you’re studying? You know Mick Jagger is almost 70 years old and still rocking?
do both if you can,if u cant follow ur dreams, ifit dusnt work u can always go 2 college
I would solidly stick to college for the next 4 years getting my degree while on my spare time and off school time, I would try to build my rock star career. You always want to have a safety net. College should be your safety net. No education, no options. An educated, well read rock star makes more of an impression than an ignorant one with no degree! At least that’s how I feel!
Do both. You won’t become a star overnight anyway. It takes awhile to get a unique sound and then to get noticed. So do both and if it takes awhile to get noticed, you can still make a decent living.

…yeah but did MICK JAGGER go to college, I don’t think so!
Try to go on those talent shows that they usually have on television and try to get discovered while you’re studying and once you land the big paying contract, then you can drop out of college.
I do stand up comedy and I go to open mike at least once a month. Not only does that help me try to get discovered, it gives me practice once I get a regular gig. But, school, I could never leave it behind to pursue my stand up comedy career.

But that’s the point I am trying to make. You have plenty of time! Give your studies the time they need and maybe even major in music history or something related to your music. Not only will it help you in your career as a musician, but it will help you appreciate more your music and will inspire you and give you more passion to pursue your rock star career. You’re young!

Maybe your right!…You make a lot of sense. Thanks DUDE!!! : )
My brother is doing a degree in music so that if anything happens with his band he can still get a career in music, he manages to play with his band and practice while doing his study and trust me if he can do it anybody can! Good luck!
Is not that you’re playing safe by actually going to college and getting a degree so you can actually support yourself by getting a regular job, but you will also be able to have the freedom to actually pursue what your actual passion and for you it’s music. When you don’t have to worry about how your next dollar is going to be made or where your next meal is coming from, you can actually dedicate all the time in the world to what you actually love to do.
No worries in your mind means more inspiration to purse your rock star career.
Good luck to you!

Ahem. Mick Jagger DID go to college. He went to London School Of Economics on a 3 A-level pass scholarship…
Do both. Or you’ll regret and be struggling for a LONG time. And that’s worse than failing at both.

Thank you for the correction Grace! I almost forgot about that. I saw that in an interview and forgot about it!
Well, I’ll admit I did have to google it. But only because I forgot the name of the college. Lol. I just knew he attended and graduated.
take a risk you could always have go back to college if does not work out
I say finish college, have a back up plan i.e. education for another career, then go for the dreams. If they fail, you had a back up plan. What else are you interested in? Make that your back up plan.
finish college first and that’s exactly what I’m doing now!! Next year is my final yea and I will start going to a vocal class next month so that I can be a singer. I just want to make one album and it’s enough. One Hit Wonder!! It wont be that hard. You can start by joining clubs at college and improve yourself before going into the real scene!
Think of it this way, because I have had the same conflict of interest as you: I went to college and now work at the US Government as an Economist while working and actively getting gigs in music; I hope to leave the job within the next year and fully support myself in music (worst case scenario, maybe sooner.) I am 24 years old, and still not too old to support myself AND make a good living doing the music that I love. I am also able to purchase recording equipment, pay back debts and live alone comfortably. THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF I DIDNT GET A DEGREE!! GO TO COLLEGE
I am also having this dilemma in my life, but think i have a handle on it. I have always wanted to make movies ever since I was younger. I went to a 4 year college and got a bachelor’s degree in film production. So I now have a bachelor’s degree in something that I love. You can go for a bachelor’s degree in music to learn more advanced concepts like the theory of music and the appreciation of different styles of music. All the while trying to set up gigs at local bars and clubs. Dont be so concerned with how old you are it does not matter how old you are to realize your dreams… I too feel like I am getting old at 23 but I think it is just my want to work on films as much as possible. I am trying to realize this but the longer it takes the more frustrating it feels. Just keep at it and get noticed and you will be all set. Get out there and play your music.
