man help: 3 men walk into a hotel and ask for a room for each of them. - Help.com

This post left anonymously

3 men walk into a hotel and ask for a room for each of them.

The receptionist tells them that they only have one room left for £30. With no other options the men decide to split it evenly and each chips in £10. After the men have gone up to their rooms the receptionist feels bad for charging them full price and gives the porter £5 to give back to the men. Unsure of how to split £5 3 ways the porter instead pockets £2 and gives each man back £1. So each man paid £9 for the room, so altogether (£9×3) they paid £27. With the £2 in the porter’s pocket that is £29. Where is the missing pound?

The clerk gave the porter 5 pounds back so the three men really paid 25 pounds for the room. When the porter gave each man 1 pound back all together they had 28 pounds and the porter kept 2 so that makes 30. There is no missing pound! One of the man paid 10 pounds for the room. Which one I don’t know.

Littlenick’s mostly right- but they each paid 9 pounds for the room. I like to add it up as the 9 pounds each paid (9*3 = 27) plus the 1 pound each was refunded (1*3=3) adding up to 30.

ok Errant is right but when u take 9*3 your have already multiplied the 3 pounds given back to the men and the clerk has the other 2 pounds so mathematically that one pound is still missing there is no mathematical way to figure this out
