life help: Do our experiences define us? - Help.com

Do our experiences define us?

If not, what more is there to determine who we are?

Imagine a kid who gets abused by his father. Now he is scarred for life. He can take any number of future paths. He can choose to take revenge on the world, he can save others, he can repress it… etc. Regardless of what path he chooses, he will base his decision on past experiences (or by using logic, based on similar people’s experiences).

I think everything that happens to us in our early childhood affects who we will be or react

Nurture is definitely a shaping force of people.
But they are other things, that influence us. The obviously one is genetics.
There is also brain-wiring, which develops at a certain point during pregnancy. Brain-wiring has a lot to do with what we find easy to learn, and what things interest us more than others.
There are other factors, which you may or may not personally believe in, like past life experience. But then that’s still a kind of experience isn’t it?

There are also strange animal behaviours, like mob mentality, strength of will. Will a person be drawn in looting and violence if it breaks out on the streets or not!
The flight or fight instinct. And autonomic reflexes!

There’s also part of the nurture arguement… how much does society influence us?
If there’s a war are we blindly patriotic or not?

A very interesting and thought provoking post. Thankyou Pocoloco :)

No Doug thank you, for bringing up some of the things I have missed. I’m beginning to see more clearly now.

And Sky, I believe so too. I think I am close to what I’m looking for. Thanks.
